St. John's IceCaps News Release
The St. John's IceCaps were thumped 6-0 by the Portland Pirates in a penalty-filled affair Wednesday night at the Cross Insurance Arena in Portland, Maine.
The Pirates scored four powerplay goals, a shorthander and an even strength marker. Six different Portland skaters found the back of the net - Henrik Samuelsson, Justin Hodgeman, Lucas Lessio, Tyler Gaudet, Alexandre Bolduc and Dylan Reese. Patrick McNeill paced the winners with three assists and goaltender Mike McKenna picked up the shutout and added an assist.
Samuelsson opened scoring at 5:12 of the first period, on the powerplay, from the slot and Justin Hodgeman made it 2-0 from a similar location about three minutes later. Lessio scored an extra-strength goal at 10:47 to make it 3-0 and put Portland in the driver's seat. Gaudet scored on a shorthanded breakaway at 2:32 of the middle frame, thanks to a nifty pass from goaltender McKenna. Bolduc and Reese scored powerplay markers at 10:21 and 18:36 of the final stanza to round out scoring. IceCaps netminder Connor Hellebuyck faced 26 shots on the evening.
