Abbotsford Heat News Release
The Flames remained in the playoff hunt with a 5-2 victory over Rockford on Wednesday at the i wireless Center. Brett Sutter scored twice in the win while Dustin Boyd, Kyle Greentree and Brad Cole added solo markers. With the victory, the Flames remain mathematically alive for the final position in the West Division playoffs. To qualify for the Calder Cup Playoffs, Quad City still needs a pair of wins over Iowa and either a pair of losses by the Hogs or a trio of defeats by the Houston Aeros.
The Flames dominated the opening frame and took a 3-0 lead on the Hogs after one period. Dustin Boyd scored on a goal-mouth scramble at 3:37 of the period. The skilled center's first AHL goal of the season staked Quad City to a 1-0 advantage. Three and a half minutes later Brett Sutter netted a shorthanded goal on a 2-on-1 break with David Van der Gulik. The Flames capped their first period onslaught with a power-play goal by Kyle Greentree at 18:37 of the frame. Carsen Germyn took a point shot that was tipped by Greentree to give Quad City a 3-0 edge after the first frame.
The Hogs cut into the Flames' lead with the only goal of the middle period. Tyler Mosienko scored for Rockford on the man advantage at 12:42 of the second. The Flames were able to hold off a charge by the Hogs in the middle period and retain a two-goal edge after 40 minutes.
A tight defensive third period exploded late as Brett Sutter and Brad Cole scored shorthanded into an empty Rockford net. The Hogs responded by scoring on the man advantage as Jake Dowell converted on a goal-mouth scramble with just four seconds left to set the final at 5-2.
The Flames host Iowa on Friday in their 2008-09 regular season home finale. Game time is 7:05 p.m. on Friday. Prior to the contest, Flames players will be honored during the 2008-09 Player Awards Ceremony. During the contest, the team's road jerseys will be up for auction on the concourse. Winning bidders can pick up their jersey from the Flames office next week. For tickets to Friday's game, visit the i wireless Center Box Office, call 1-800-745-3000 or go on-line to ticketmaster.com.
