Peoria Rivermen News Release
PEORIA, Ill. (April 8, 2009) - The West Division's top two teams squared off Wednesday night at Carver Arena with the first-place Milwaukee Admirals prevailing 2-1 in a shootout victory over the Peoria Rivermen. The Admirals scored on three of their first four shootout attempts while goalie Drew MacIntyre stoned all three Rivermen shooters he faced to secure the win and end Peoria's win streak at six.
Peoria has still earned at least a point in eight consecutive games and by reaching overtime they secured one point and are just one point away from clinching second-place in the division.
Wednesday's game was scoreless until 3:38 into the second period when Ian McKenzie netted his third goal of the season to give the Admirals a 1-0 lead. McKenzie cleaned up a loose puck by pushing it past Chris Holt, who started his first game for the Rivermen since March 19. Holt made 23 saves on the evening.
Nicholas Drazenovic tied the game for Peoria a little later in the middle frame at the 14:35 mark. After a T.J Fast pass sprung the Rivermen center in behind the defense, he dangled the puck on his forehand and got MacIntyre to slide to his right, which left the other side of the net wide open for Drazenovic to roof a backhander. Drazenovic's goal was his 12th of the season and fifth since the all-star break. Fast and Alexander Hellstrom snagged helpers on the goal; Hellstrom's assist was his first point of the season.
Peoria generated most of the offensive pressure throughout the third period, outshooting Milwaukee 10-4 in the final frame. But MacIntyre was on his game, grabbing 37 saves for the game. The Rivermen (42-31-2-3, 89 points) definitely earned their point in the standings by executing a couple of huge penalty kills in the waning moments of the third period.
The Rivermen had a golden opportunity to win the game in the opening minute of overtime as Hugh Jessiman was tagged with a hooking penalty with only two seconds remaining in regulation. Milwaukee held true to its top-notch penalty killing reputation though, and the Admirals extended the game to the shootout.
Last time Peoria was held scoreless in the first period was March 28 against Houston. Neither team scored on the power play: Peoria finished 0-for 3, Milwaukee went 0-for-4. Peoria, who outshot Milwaukee 38-25, fell to 15-15-1-2 when registering more shots than their opponent.
The Rivermen will have their next chance at locking up home ice for the first round of the playoffs on Friday at 7:30 p.m. when they head to Rockford to tangle with the IceHogs. The game will be broadcast live on Hippie 101.1FM as well as www.rivermen.net.
