LOWELL, Mass. "" The Lowell Devils (33-24-5-4) scored three unanswered goals to overtake the Springfield Falcons (25-39-1-2) and earn a 3-1 victory at the Tsongas Arena on Wednesday night.
Springfield came out firing to start the game, putting 12 shots on Devils netminder Jordan Parise. The Falcons tallied the only goal of the first frame, as Norm Milley potted his 23rd of the year. The initial shot from the blue line missed the net, but Milley pounced on the puck as it caromed off the end boards. The first period moved quickly, as neither team was penalized in the opening twenty minutes.
The Devils controlled the play in the second frame, and tied the game at 5:24 when Grant Marshall scored on a redirection of a Mark Fraser slapshot for his sixth goal of the season. The Devils took the lead for good later in the period, when Tuomas Pihlman sprang Ryan Murphy on a breakaway, and Murphy buried the puck past Falcons G Karri Ramo for the 2-1 lead. The Devils held the Falcons to only seven shots in the period, while recording 18 of their own.
In the third, Lowell gained some insurance when Petr Vrana connected with his 11th goal of the campaign at 13:44. Vrana took a pass in front of the net from Ryan Murphy and squeezed it by Ramo to give the Devils a two-goal lead. Stephen Gionta also assisted on the goal.
The Devils win combined with the Worcester Sharks loss to the Providence Bruins means that Lowell now owns a four point cushion over Worcester for the fourth and final playoff spot in the Atlantic Division. The Devils still only trail Providence by three points for third place.
The Devils host two games this weekend, starting Friday night at 7:05 p.m. when they host the Portland Pirates. On Sunday afternoon, the Hartford Wolf Pack come to town for a 4:05 p.m. contest. Following the game, there will be a public skate sponsored by Jeanne D'Arc Credit Union as well as a full team autograph session, free for everyone in attendance. All Devils games, home and away, can be heard on WCAP 980AM with the Voice of the Devils, Ryan Johnston, or online through B2 Networks on www.lowelldevilshockey.com.
