"Day of Hockey", presented by Bill Dodge, Raises $10,000

Portland, Maine - Today Brian Petrovek, President of the Portland Pirates Foundation, along with members of the Portland Pirates team and staff, players and coaches from Cape Elizabeth and Cheverus High School and Huskies youth hockey teams visited The Barbara Bush Children's Hospital at Maine Medical Center in Portland to present a donation of $10,000 on behalf of the "Day of Hockey." The donation represents the funds raised through the "Day of Hockey" hosted by the Portland Pirates Foundation and presented by the Bill Dodge Auto Group that was held on February 25th. The day long event featured a Portland Pirates game against the Lowell Devils, a post-game skate sponsored by Weight Watchers, as well as many other hockey events including the Salty Pete's "Skate for the Kids", The 3rd Annual Clash of the Classes High School Boys Hockey game (Cape Elizabeth vs. Cheverus), a Girls High School Hockey game (Greely vs. Cheverus), Broomball and Youth Hockey events involving games between Huskies and Biddeford mites and squirts. The $10,000 donation brings the three year total to $45,000 raised for the hospital.

The donation was presented to the Barbara Bush Children's Hospital Nurse Manager, Louise Barton. Along with the donation, the Pirates also presented "Get Well" cards that were signed by the participants in the "Day of Hockey" along with the toys that were donated to the kids at the hospital on the day of the event. While at the hospital, the Pirates players also visited the kids in the in-patient unit to hand out "Day of Hockey" t-shirts, Pirates player cards and sign autographs.

"On behalf of everyone involved with the Day of Hockey, we are pleased to provide financial support to the Barbara Bush Children's Hospital at Maine Medical Center. We are very grateful to all those who volunteered their time and money to help make this event a success. We especially want to thank the Bill Dodge Auto Group for their sponsorship of the event. This is a world class children's medical facility and we are proud to be able to support it once again and are committed to continuing our support in the future," said President, Portland Pirates Foundation, Brian Petrovek.

This was the third year in a row the Portland Pirates Foundation has held this event to benefit The Barbara Bush Children's Hospital at Maine Medical Center. Last year, the "Day of Hockey" raised $25,000 for the hospital which included a concert at the Cumberland County Civic Center. Over the past three seasons, the Pirates and the two high schools have raised $45,000 for The Barbara Bush Children's Hospital at Maine Medical Center.

The event benefited from the support of a number of companies, local sponsors and individuals, leading with the presenting sponsor, the Bill Dodge Auto Group (signed to a 2-year commitment as the presenting sponsor), The Cumberland County Civic Center, Haley's Tire Service, BBI Waste, Cheverus and Cape Elizabeth High Schools, and Huskies Youth Hockey and the Portland Professional Booster Club. As part of the overall fundraising efforts, Mick's Backyard Skate, an event hosted by 10-year old Mick Mansir at a rink in his back yard, raised over $1,400.

We feel privileged to make numerous visits to the hospital throughout the course of the season and our presence and ability to come to the hospital and bond with these kids is the least we can do," said Pirates assistant captain Geoff Peters.
