Atlantic City Surf News Release
Atlantic City, N.J. - Atlantic City DH Clyde Williams went 4-for-4 with four RBI as the Surf defeated the New Jersey Jackals, 9-4, in a Can-Am League contest at Bernie Robbins Stadium on Monday evening. The victory, taking place in the first game of the second half for both teams, was the Surf's fourth in a row and the sixth in their last seven games.
After the Jackals (0-1) tallied a run in the first inning on 3B Chris Kelly's sacrifice fly, Atlantic City (1-0) took the lead in the bottom half of the frame, 3-1, with LF Joe Burke's RBI single and Williams' two-run home run. The Surf added a run in the second on 3B Gil Zayas' RBI single up the middle.
New Jersey scored two runs in the third on Kelly's two-run blast, and tied the game in the fifth on 1B Juan Tejeda's run-scoring single. It was all Atlantic City the rest of the way, however, scoring five unanswered runs to put the game out of reach. The Surf registered two in the fifth on RF Josh Burrus' two-run single, and added another in the sixth on Zayas' second home run of the season, a solo shot. They then added a pair of insurance runs in the eighth on Williams' two-RBI single to make it 9-4.
Brian Rodaway (5-4) earned the victory for Atlantic City, giving up three earned runs on eight hits in six innings of work, striking out three. After his departure, Aaron Easton and Walker Whitley were solid out of the bullpen for the Surf; the pair limited the Jackals to two hits in three frames. Ted Serro (1-1) was saddled with the loss for New Jersey, allowing six earned in five and two-thirds innings.
It was Williams' second four-hit game of the season. He also went 4-for-5 with two home runs in the team's 14-11 loss to visiting Brockton on June 8. Burke and Zayas both went 2-for-3 with two runs scored for Atlantic City. For the Jackals, CF Zach Smithlin and 2B Tom Murphy went 2-for-4.
Winners of nine of their last 12 games, the Surf return to action Tuesday night, with J.C. Huguet (6-1) opposing New Jersey's Tom Atlee (1-0).
