
Sussex Sneaks Past Pride; 6-4

(Augusta, N.J., July 14, 2008) Sussex Skyhawks starting pitcher Matt Salvato (5-2) delivered a solid seven innings against the Nashua Pride en route to a victory, giving up four runs, on nine hits, one walk and three strike outs, to help Sussex to a 6-4 win over Nashua on Monday night.
The Pride jumped out to a 3-0 lead in the top of the first but could not hold on against the Skyhawks. Sussex first baseman Matt Weston went 1-for-4 with a home run and 2 RBI, while shortstop Kevin Rios was 2-for-4 with and RBI. Right fielder Jorge Moreno also tallied and RBI finishing the night 1-for-2 with a double, while teammate Alex Frazier also knocked in a run.
Skyhawks closer Matt Petrusek tied the league lead with his eleventh save of the season, pitching the final six outs in the ball game.
Nashua first baseman Bryan Duplissie belted his league leading eleventh home run of the season in the game, a solo shot, and finished the night 2-for-4 with two RBI and two runs scored. Right fielder Jeremy Pickrel was 2-for-4 with an RBI while designated hitter Mike Torres finished 1-for-4 with a double and an RBI.
Pride starting pitcher Jarrett Stawarz had a no-decision in the game, lasting four innings, giving up three runs, on six hits, three walks and two strike outs. Reliever German Melendez suffered the loss (1-4) going one and one-third innings, giving up three runs, on four hits and two walks.
The Pride and Skyhawks will play game two of the three game series on Tuesday night, at 7:05pm, when Nashua send Jason Paul (1-1) to the mound for his third start of the season. Sussex will counter with Kyle Ruwe (7-2).
