Brockton Rox News Release

Brockton, MA (July 14, 2008) - The Brockton Rox began the second half of the 2008 season on Monday night with a near four-hour contest against the Worcester Tornadoes which featured 21 total runs on 25 hits between the two teams. Despite three come back attempts, including a last-gasp ninth-inning rally, the Rox fell 11-10 in the series opener, leaving the tying run on second base at the end of the game.

The teams combined for four home runs, including Tornadoes' LF Francisco Caraballo's first-inning, three-run home run off of Rox starter RHP John Kelly. Kelly allowed eight runs on seven hits in 4.1 innings; the most runs he has allowed since July 15th, 2005.

The Rox tied the game at 3-3 in the third when 3B Phillip Cuadrado hit a two-run home run. Worcester then chased Kelly from the game by scoring four times in the fourth and pushing the lead to 8-3 on 1B Chris Colabello's solo home run in the fifth inning.

The Rox clawed back to within one run when SS Dominic Ramos hit a three-run home run in the sixth inning to make it 8-7. Worcester scored three runs in the seventh to take an 11-7 advantage, but the Rox made it interesting in the ninth. The first seven batters of the inning reached and three of the first four scored. But Worcester closer RHP John Birtwell was able to pick up his eighth save of the season getting a strikeout with the tying run on second base and two outs.

Both starting pitchers figured in the decision despite early exits. Guerrero pitched into the sixth inning for the first time since June 13th to get his fourth win of the season.

The Rox and Tornadoes play again on Tuesday night at Hanover Insurance Park in Worcester as LHP Tom Cochran looks to improve to 9-0 on the season for the Tornadoes against Rox LHP Rolando Viera. First pitch is scheduled for 7:05 PM.
