New Jersey Jackals News Release

Atlantic City, NJ - DH Clyde Williams led the way offensively for the Atlantic City Surf, going 4-4 with four RBIs and a run scored as the Jackals fell to the Surf 9-4 on Monday night at Bernie Robbins Stadium. In the loss, New Jersey pitchers walked six batters and hit two more.

The Jackals jumped on Atlantic City starter Brian Rodaway in the top of the first inning when CF Zack Smithlin led off with a walk and scored on a sacrifice fly by 3B Chris Kelly to give New Jersey an early 1-0 lead. However, Atlantic City countered in the bottom of the frame when their leadoff hitter, SS Anthony Granato, walked to begin the inning and advanced to third on a throwing error by Jackals pitcher Ted Serro on an attempted pickoff. The next batter, LF Joe Burke singled Granato home to tie the score at 1-1. Williams followed with a two-run home run to give Atlantic City a 3-1 lead at the end of the first.

In the bottom of the second inning, Surf CF Billy Kovatch reached to start off the inning on a throwing error by Jackals SS Bryant Nelson. Kovatch then stole second before crossing the plate on an RBI base knock by 3B Gil Zayas to extend the Surf lead to 4-1. In the top of the third, the Jackals pulled within one when 3B Chris Kelly lifted a two-run home run to left center. Kelly's eighth homer of the year cut the Jackals deficit to 4-3.

In the top of the fifth, the Jackals started the inning with back-to-back hits by 2B Tommy Murphy and Smithlin before 1B Juan Tejeda singled home the tying run to even the score at 4-4. But in the bottom of the inning, Atlantic City continued the back-and-forth trend. 2B Brad Thoma led off with a double and, following two walks, RF Josh Burrus singled home two runs to put AC back on top by a score of 6-4 at the end of the fifth.

In the sixth inning, Surf 3B Gil Zayas led off with his second home run of the season to extend Atlantic City's lead to 7-4. Serro then recorded two outs before allowing back-to-back singles by Burke and Williams to place runners on the corners with two outs. Serro was removed from the game in favor of reliever Michael Vicaro, who struck out Burrus to end the threat.

In the bottom of the eighth inning, Atlantic City added two insurance runs. Vicaro walked two batters and exited with one out. After reliever Brandon Martin surrendered a walk to load the bases, Williams laced his fourth hit of the game, a two-run single to cap the scoring at 9-4.

Rodaway (5-4) struggled early, but settled down to earn the win. The left-hander scattered eight hits over six innings while giving up three earned runs in the victory. For the Jackals, Serro (1-1) takes the loss after allowing seven runs - six earned - in 5 2/3 innings while striking out two and walking three.

The Jackals and Surf continue their three-game series tomorrow night at 7:05 p.m. at Bernie Robbins Stadium when New Jersey sends right-hander Tom Atlee to the mound against Atlantic City's J.C. Huguet. If you can't make it out to the ballpark, you can catch every inning via live webcast at www.jackals.com with the broadcast beginning at 6:30 p.m. with the Jackals Midseason Report.
