Delmarva Shorebirds News Release
SALISBURY, MD - The Delmarva Shorebirds couldn't take full advantage of six Hagerstown Suns errors, dropping the series finale 4-3 in 11 innings on Sunday afternoon at Arthur W. Perdue Stadium.
With the Shorebirds (32-28) up 2-1 in the ninth, Luis Garcia reached on a one-out walk and moved to second on a Cole Freeman sac bunt. Aldrem Corredor then came up and pelted a ball into left field for an RBI single, scoring Garcia to get the Suns (24-37) even at 2-2.
The Shorebirds had a chance to win it in the bottom of the ninth, putting men on the corners with two out, but a would-be wild pitch didn't get far enough away from Hagerstown catcher Jeyner Baez, who threw Will Robertson out at the plate to force extras.
Neither side scored in the 10th inning, but the Suns broke through thanks to some help in the 11th. With Omar Meregildo starting as the free runner at second, Kameron Esthay hit a grounder to first that Ryan Ripken misplayed, allowing Meregildo to score to make it 3-2 and moving Esthay to second Baez came up next and laid down a would-be sac bunt, but Ripken missed the catch at first base and the ball careened into right, scoring Esthay to push it to 4-2.
In Delmarva's 11th, Craport started on second and moved up to third on a Ripken grounder-turned-error at second. Branden Becker came up next and grounded into a run-scoring fielder's choice to trim the deficit to 4-3. Robertson came up next and hit into another fielder's choice, advancing to second on a bad throw, Hagerstown's sixth error of the day. With the tying run in scoring position, Ben Breazeale struck out to end the game, delivering the Suns a series win.
Steven Fuentes (1-1) picked up the win in relief for the Suns, allowing an unearned run on one hits over four innings while walking one and striking out three. Gray Fenter took the loss for the Shorebirds after allowing two unearned runs in the 11th.
Delmarva found some offense in the second inning. Becker took one off the waist with one out and went to third on a Robertson double. Breazeale came up next and rolled one slowly to second for an RBI groundout to put the Shorebirds up 1-0.
In the third, Kirvin Moesquit began a wild ride around the bases with a leadoff single. Hagerstown starter Tomas Alastre caught Moesquit leaning to the wrong side of first base, but his pickoff throw to first sailed wide of the bag, and Moesquit took second on the error. Moments later, Moesquit got hung up between second and third, but shortstop Yasel Antuna airmailed the throw to third base, and Moesquit came all the way around to score to make it 2-0.
The Suns answered in the fourth inning. Meregildo led off with a single, and Esthay followed with a run-scoring double to the right-center gap to make it 2-1. Moesquit left the game after the play as his relay throw to the plate caused a side injury.
Both teams went quiet at the plate from there until Hagerstown's breakthrough in the ninth.
Corrdeor finished 2-for-5 with an RBI to lead the Suns, while Esthay doubled, scored, and drove in one.
Jarrett and Robertson both finished 2-for-5 with a double for the Shorebirds.
Neither starting pitcher factored into the decision. Delmarva's DL Hall faced an elevated pitch count in three scoreless innings, scattering two hits and two walks while striking out two. He threw 72 pitches, 16 of which Hagerstown batters fouled off with two strikes.
Alastre turned in a Quality Start for the Suns, allowing two runs (one earned) on seven hits in six innings.
Max Knutson picked up a hold in his Shorebird debut, pitching a scoreless seventh and eighth while stranding three runners total. Alexis Torres also got into his first game for Delmarva, replacing Moesquit at second in the fourth; he went 0-for-3.
The Shorebirds now close out the first half with nine straight on the road, starting with the opener of a six-game series in Kannapolis on Monday night. Jhon Peluffo (0-1, 10.13) gets the start for Delmarva against an Intimidators starter to be announced. First pitch is set for 7:05 p.m., and pregame coverage on Fox Sports 960 AM and the MiLB First Pitch app begins at 6:50 with Will DeBoer on the call.
