
Suns Take Series Finale in Extras on Sunday

Salisbury, MD - The Hagerstown Suns hung on in extra innings to beat Delmarva Shorebirds in the series finale on Sunday afternoon 4-3 in 11 innings at Arthur W. Perdue Stadium. Hagerstown improves to 24-37 overall and will begin a four-game series against the Lakewood BlueClaws on Monday with a 7:05 PM first pitch.
Delmarva scored the first run of the game in the bottom of the second inning against Suns starter Tomas Alastre. With one out Branden Becker was hit by a pitch and went to third when Will Robertson doubled to left with two strikes. Ben Breazeale grounded out to short, but Becker scored and Robertson went to third to make it a 1-0 Shorebirds lead. Alastre struck out Jaylen Ferguson to end the inning and the threat.
The Shorebirds scored another run on Alastre in the third inning to extend their lead. Kirvin Mosequit singled to right and went to second when Alastre made an errant throw on a pickoff attempt. Mosequit scored when he was picked off and caught stealing third, but Yasel Antuna made an errant throw that gave the Shorebirds a 2-0 advantage.
Hagerstown cut the Shorebirds lead in half as Delmarva reliever Reed Hayes took the mound in the fourth. With one out, Omar Meregildo singled to right and touched home when Kameron Esthay doubled to right on the first pitch he saw, making it a 2-1 game.
Neither team could score until the ninth, when the Suns tied the game with two outs. Luis Garcia worked a one-out walk and went to second on a sacrifice bunt by Cole Freeman. Aldrem Corredor singled to left, driving home Garcia to even the score at 2-2.
In the 11th inning, Hagerstown took their first lead of the day. Meregildo started the inning at second base and Esthay reached on a fielding error by Ryan Ripken that brought Meregildo around to score, putting the Suns in front 3-2. Jeyner Baez laid down a sacrifice bunt to move Esthay over, but another error by Ripken plated Esthay and the Suns took a two-run lead. Delmarva scored in the bottom of the inning, but Steven Fuentes was able to lock up a 4-3 victory for Hagerstown.
Alastre had a quality start after throwing six innings while holding Delmarva to two runs (one earned) on seven hits with a walk and four strikeouts. Carlos Pena worked on inning in relief with a strikeout. Fuentes (1-1) threw four innings, allowing one unearned run with a hit, a walk, and three strikeouts in a win.
Notes: Alastre had his fourth quality start of the season, which is second on the team... He has hit a batter in each of his last four starts... Alastre tied his career high of six innings pitched for the third times... All of those occasions have come in 2018... Meregildo has a hit in each of his first two games with Hagerstown... Banks had his 14th multi-hit game of the season... He snapped a four-game hitless streak... Corredor extended his hit streak to four games... He also had his 14th multi-hit game of the year... Hagerstown left 13 runners on base, one shy of the season-high... Hagerstown's six errors are the most in a game this season for the club... The Suns won their sixth series of the season... Sunday's win also puts them at 5-2 in the rubber game of a three-game set... The Suns and Shorebirds played their final game of the first half, with Delmarva leading the season series seven games to four... The Suns begin a four-game series against the Lakewood BlueClaws on Monday with a 7:05 PM first pitch... The two teams meet for the final time in the first half.... The Suns will send RHP Matt DeRosier (2-3, 4.28) to the mound against Lakewood RHP Andrew Brown (1-0, 1.80)...
