Jacksonville Jumbo Shrimp News Release
HUNTSVILLE, AL - The Jacksonville Suns (28-15, 64-49) are certainly no strangers to close ballgames as they battled to hold off the Huntsville Stars (19-24, 65-48) by a 3-2 final on Saturday from Joe Davis Stadium, earning a series victory in the process.
Robert Morey (W, 3-2) put forth a quality start and earned the win, allowing a pair of runs (both earned) on five hits with four walks and three strikeouts in six-plus innings of work in his Saturday night outing.
Greg Nappo (H, 9) gave up a lone hit over the course of two scoreless innings, striking out a trio of Stars hitters along the way.
Nick Wittgren (SV, 17) earned the save by working a hitless bottom of the ninth, only issuing a single walk in his outing.
Eric Marzec (L, 1-3) took the loss for Huntsville, allowing three runs (two earned) on five hits in 5.2 innings of work, while walking a batter and striking out three Suns.
The home team grabbed the early lead with a lone run in the bottom of the first inning. Nick Shaw came in to score on a RBI single from Hector Gimenez to put the Stars in front 1-0 after the first inning of play.
But the Suns had an immediate response, striking for three runs to take the lead in the top of the second inning. The Suns took the lead on Isaac Galloway's two-run triple and added a third run when Galloway came in to score on shortstop Yadiel Rivera's fielding error on a ball hit off the bat of Brent Keys to give the Suns a 3-1 advantage in the top of the second inning.
That 3-1 score held until the bottom of the seventh when the Stars drew a run closer. Adam Weisenburger (HR, 2) led off the frame with a solo homer to right field to cut Jacksonville's lead to 3-2 after seven innings.
With the win, the Suns have earned a series victory with two more games to go in the five-game set.
The Suns and Stars will be back at it on Sunday, with first pitch set for 4:00 p.m. CT (5:00 p.m. ET). The Suns will start left-hander Justin Nicolino (9-3, 2.95) while the Stars will send out a lefty of their own in Jed Bradley (4-5, 3.81).
Suns fans can listen to Sunday's game on the Suns Baseball Network, 94.1 WSOS-FM or through www.jaxsuns.com, MiLB.com or the Suns iPhone or Android app, beginning at 4:30 p.m. ET with the Memorial Hospital Suns Pregame Show on Suns Sunday.
