Hagerstown, MD - The Hagerstown Suns (23-15) scored four runs in the final two innings to defeat the Delmarva Shorebirds (18-22) 5-4 on a walk off hit by Jason Martinson at Municipal Stadium on Friday night.
The Shorebirds scored in the first inning for a fifth straight game. Kyle Hoppy hit a one out single to left field. Then, Nicky Delmonico smacked a double off the wall in right-center field. Hoppy scored on a wild pitch by Alex Meyer. Later, Wynston Sawyer singled up the middle to plate Delmonico.
In the third, Brenden Webb hit a solo home run over the right-center field wall to increase the lead to 3-0. He now leads the Shorebirds with four home runs.
The Shorebirds extended their lead to 4-0 in the fourth. Glynn Davis extended his hit streak to eight games with a single. Then, Hoppy hit a soft flare down the right field line to score Davis from first.
The Suns plated an unearned run in the sixth inning against Eduardo Rodriguez. Jason Martinson reached on an error by Connor Narron. He moved second on a single by Matt Skole and got to third on a throwing error by Gabriel Lino. With the bases loaded, Rodriguez hit Caleb Ramsey to force in the run.
Rodriguez was excellent over six innings. He allowed just one unearned run and just four hits.
The Suns rallied in the eighth inning to tie the game at 4-4 against reliever Matt Taylor. Matt Skole reached on a one out walk and moved to third on a double into left-center field by Adrian Nieto. Then, Justin Miller popped out near the Suns dugout and Skole tagged and scored as nobody was covering the plate. The next batter, Caleb Ramsey, hit a two-run homer to right-center field to tie the game at 4-4.
Williams Louico entered in the ninth inning for Taylor and walked Brian Goodwin. Then, Louico threw low to first on a pickoff move, allowing Goodwin to advance all the way to third. With one out, Martinson singled up the middle to score Goodwin to give the Suns a 5-4 win.
Hagerstown relievers Ben Hawkins and Bobby Lucas did not allow a hit over the final four innings.
