RiverDogs Split Doubleheader with Rome

CHARLESTON, SC- Francisco Arcia had four hits, including three doubles, to lead the Charleston RiverDogs to a 10-5 victory over the Rome Braves to earn a split of a doubleheader in South Atlantic League action on Friday night at Joseph P. Riley, Jr. Park. A Fernando De Los Santos homer in the tenth inning gave Rome a 3-2 win in the game one of the twin bill. The attendance for game one was a season high 6,861 at Riley Park, and game two brought 3,702 out to the park.

The split of the two games puts the first-place RiverDogs record at 27-13, with Rome moving to 9-30.

De Los Santos' (2-4, HR) first homer of the year led off the tenth against lefty Fred Lewis (3-1) in the first game and broke a tie that had stood since the third inning. Ryan Weber (1-0) pitched four scoreless innings in relief for Rome and closed out the game for the win.

The two teams started the afternoon by resuming the game that was suspended due to rain back on April 5. With Mason Williams on third after his leadoff triple back on Opening Day, Cito Culver hit a sacrifice fly to tie the game at 1-1 on the first pitch of the day. The teams then traded runs on RBI singles, with Reymond Nunez knocking in Ben Gamel in the second, and William Beckwith driving in Kyle Kubitza in the third to re-tie the game.

After the early scoring, both pitchers shut down the opposing offenses. Scottie Allen, whose outing started in the second inning due to the suspension, pitched seven innings and allowed just one run with six strikeouts. Rome's Ernesto Silva kept the Charleston offense at bay with a fine outing of his own, giving up just one run through six innings. The game headed to extras still tied and De Los Santos homer provided the winning margin.

In game two, the RiverDogs scored eight runs between the fourth, fifth and sixth innings to blow open the game. In the fourth with two men on, a throwing error following an infield single by Cito Culver brought in two runs and Ben Gamel (3-4, RBI, run) followed with an RBI base hit to make the score 5-2. Charleston scored two more times in the fifth on hits by Arcia (4-4, 3 RBI, 3 runs) and Angelo Gumbs and added three more runs the next inning, two of them scoring on Arcia's third double of the night.

Both teams got off to a fast start with runs in first inning. De Los Santos led-off the game with a home run for Rome, and an RBI single by Gary Sanchez in the bottom of the first then tied the game. In the second, an RBI groundout by Angelo Gumbs made the score 2-1, but an Elmer Reyes third inning solo homer evened the score.

BALLPARK FUN: This unique doubleheader brought a lot of fans out to the ballpark. The 6,861 fans at the first game was the highest attendance for a RiverDogs' game so far this year. Long time RiverDogs' season ticket holder Mr. Washington was recognized on the field between the two games, and presented with a gift by other season ticket holders for his support of RiverDogs' baseball.

COMING UP: The fourth game of the series is Saturday night with Charleston's RHP Will Oliver (1-2, 3.14 ERA) scheduled to face RHP Rafael Briceno (2-4, 5.97 ERA). The Bubba Gump Run Forest Run 5K will begin at the ballpark at 5 pm and end at home plate. Fans who are Tri-County Residents will save $1 off tickets at the stadium box office on Lowcountry Local First Saturday. The first 1,000 fans in the ballpark will receive free RiverDogs tube socks. After the game, kids can run the bases.
