Arizona Sundogs News Release

PRESCOTT VALLEY, Ariz. - The Arizona Sundogs skated into South Texas Friday night to take on the Southeast Division Rio Grande Valley Killer Bees at Dodge Arena in Hidalgo, Texas in their third of seven-straight away from Tim's Toyota Center. Arizona skated into Friday night's contest with a league-best five-game winning streak while the Killer Bees carried a four-game winless streak prior to the puck drop. Killer Bees' netminder David Lemanowicz stood tall in net for his club, stopping 36 of 38 shots en route to a 4-3 Rio Grande Valley win. Prior to Friday night's loss, Arizona was 9-0-0 on the season when scoring the game's first goal.

Arizona and its top-rated powerplay saw its first chance of the night just 2:11 into the first period as the Killer Bees' Jon Hedberg was tagged with a holding call. With 48 seconds remaining in the Sundogs' man advantage, CHL-leading rookie scorer Mark Kolanos picked up a rebound off a Karl Sellan shot and lifted the puck past a sprawling David Lemanowicz for a 1-0 lead. Tyler Redenbach tallied his league-leading 27th assist on the season along with Sellan. Rio Grande Valley answered back to take a 2-1 lead on its first two shots of the game. At the 7:14 mark, former Sundogs forward Ladislav Kouba, in his first game as a Rio Grande Valley Killer Bee, evened the game at 1-1 on passes from Rob Voltera and Jeremy Van Hoof. Wasting no time following the equalizer, Adam Edinger collected his fourth of the year 1:14 later to push the score to 2-1. Mark O'Leary and Van Hoof were credited with helpers on the Edinger goal. With less than five minutes to play in the opening frame, the Killer Bees opened a 3-1 lead as Van Hoof grabbed his first goal and third point of the night, taking a pass from Lance Herauf from behind the net. Mike Tuomi notched his first point as a Killer Bee with an assist on the play. Following the Van Hoof score, Sundogs Head Coach Marco Pietroniro replaced netminder Andrew Gallant with Bill Zaniboni after allowing three goals on just seven shots. With 1:21 to play in the period, the Sundogs cut the Killer Bees' lead back to one as defenseman Sean Sullivan notched his second goal in as many games since returning from the AHL's San Antonio Rampage. Chris Greene and Mike Bartlett grabbed helpers on the play to close out first period scoring.

Rio Grande Valley handed the visiting Sundogs five powerplay chances in the middle period, including a 5-on-3 advantage during the final 1:08 of play following penalties to the Killer Bees' Voltera and TJ Eason. The period expired though, with neither team able to solve the opposing goaltender after a five-goal first period. Arizona outshot Rio Grande Valley by a 20-6 mark in the second for a two period 33-13 advantage.

Arizona pulled even just 21 seconds into the third period with its second powerplay tally of the night as defenseman Dan Laperriere gathered passes from Jason Visser and Tyler Redenbach and found the back of the net past Lemanowicz. The Killer Bees answered back at 1:32 of the third on a Lance Herauf goal from Travis Banga and Jason Slusher. Arizona netminder Zaniboni tried to play the puck off the glass but the Rio Grande Valley pressure maintained the zone and teamed up to feed Herauf for his seventh goal of the season and the eventual game winner.

Arizona netminder Andrew Gallant started in net for Arizona but was pulled in favor or Bill Zaniboni after allowing three goals on just seven shots in sixteen minutes of play. Zaniboni deflected 10 of 11 shots in relief while David Lemanowicz blocked 37 of 40 shots, backstopping his club to its first win in five tries. The Sundogs finished 2-for-9 on the powerplay while holding Rio Grande Valley scoreless on five powerplay opportunities.

The Sundogs fall to 13-5-1 on the season and sit in a two-way tie for first place in the Southwest Division with the Odessa Jackalopes. Arizona now travels to Laredo for a Sunday afternoon match-up featuring two of the Southern Conference's top two teams. Sunday's game can be heard live beginning at 3:00pm on 96.7 FM The Wolf, the Official Broadcast Home of the Arizona Sundogs.
