Scorpions Vs. Killer Bees Blood Drive
December 7, 2007 - Central Hockey League (CHL)
New Mexico Scorpions News Release
[Rio Rancho, N.M.]-The area's only non-profit blood provider, United Blood Services New Mexico, has challenged an out-of-state United Blood Services center in conjunction with the New Mexico Scorpions hockey team to help ensure there will be enough blood for the community during and after the holiday season.
United Blood Services in Rio Rancho has challenged a sister center in McAllen, Texas, to a contest as to which center will draw the most blood. The challenge is connected to when the Rio Grande Valley Killer Bees play in Rio Rancho against the New Mexico Scorpions on December 15.
"This is a time of year when demand for blood increases and we want to make sure the community has the right type of blood whenever it is needed," said Charlene Smith, donor recruitment. "We thought this would be a fun way to encourage people to donate by incorporating a contest while including the support of the Scorpions. Rio Rancho is the third largest city in our state, yet it draws less blood than smaller communities in the state. We hope to change that and challenge the citizens of Rio Rancho to help us change it. Additionally, this is not a challenge we want to lose."
To add to the fun, the respective executive directors of each center have challenged each other. The executive director whose center collects the least amount of blood will serve lunch to the employees of the winning center. Elizabeth Waltman, executive director of United Blood Services New Mexico, said "I have no intention of losing and am counting on the community of Rio Rancho to rally for this event so we don't lose and ensure we have an adequate blood supply."
Dates for the challenge are December 10th, 12th, and 15th at the Rio Rancho center location only. Donors will receive goodie bags from community businesses as well as have the opportunity to enter a drawing to win tickets to Scorpions' games, and various Scorpions gear signed by the team. Members of the Scorpions will be at the Rio Rancho center on December 12th, from 5 - 6 PM.
Although walk-in donors will be accepted, appointments are encourages and can be made by calling 505-843-6227. The center is located at 2003 Southern Blvd., Suite 122 in Rio Rancho.
Most healthy people who are at least 17 years old and who weigh 110 pounds or more may give blood. Federal regulations require donors to wait 56 days between donations. Donors should eat healthy meals and drink plenty of fluids before donating. Picture ID is required.
The Scorpions head to the road for games Friday and Saturday night in Odessa. Both games can be heard on 1050 KTBL or seen for free on CHL Network starting at 6:05 p.m.
The next Scorpions home game is on Thursday, December 13th when the Scorpions host the Amarillo Gorillas. The puck will drop inside the Santa Ana Star Center at 7:15 p.m. Fan can also get ready for the annual "Salute to the Military Night" on Saturday, December 15th when the Scorps host Rio Grande Valley . New Mexico will wear special themed jersey to be auctioned off after the game, with part of the proceeds benefiting the Blue Star Mothers New Mexico Chapters.
