Scorpions comeback for shootout victory
December 7, 2007 - Central Hockey League (CHL)
New Mexico Scorpions News Release
[ RIO RANCHO, N.M.]-Friday night the Scorpions went to Odessa and stole away a 5-4 shootout victory. It was the first time this season the Scorps won when trailing after two periods.
Facing a two-goal deficit after forty minutes, the Scorpions kicked it into high gear in the third period. Dominic Osman scored his second goal of the game at the 5:39 mark when he trickled the puck through goalie Mike Gorman's legs. Vladimir Hartinger picked up his second power play goal on the night at the 15:02 mark, tying the game 4-4.
In what seems like a regular occurrence, New Mexico played parts of overtime shorthanded. Odessa was not able to convert despite hitting the post a couple of times.
Regulation and overtime was not enough to decide this game and neither would a standard five round shootout. It took seven rounds before Michael Kolarz was credited with the game winning goal, giving the Scorpions a three game winning streak.
Odessa came out like gangbusters in the first period. Jocelyn Dubord put the home team on the board first with his second goal of the season. The Jackalopes added to their lead when Dominic Leveille stole a Scorps pass and scored a shorthanded goal at the 18:33 mark of the opening frame.
New Mexico came out quickly in the second period. Dominic Osman's wrist shot found the net just 23 seconds into the middle frame.
The Jackalopes took very little time to answer the New Mexico tally. Leveille scored his second goal of the game at the 1:17 mark.
The Scorpions were awarded a two-man power play and used it to their advantage. Vladimir Hartinger launched a slap shot into the net cutting the Odessa lead to 3-2. Once again the Jackalopes would answer with Josh Chase's power play goal with less than a minute remaining in the second period.
Aaron MacInnis collected an assist on the evening, giving him 100 points in his professional career. Kolarz's game winning goal was the first of his career.
The teams will see if they can repeat the dramatics Saturday night. New Mexico will stay in Odessa for a 6:05 p.m. contest. The game can be heard on 1050 KTBL or seen for free on the CHL Network.
The next Scorpions home game is on Thursday, December 13th when the Scorpions host the Amarillo Gorillas. The puck will drop inside the Santa Ana Star Center at 7:15 p.m. Fan can also get ready for the annual "Salute to the Military Night" on Saturday, December 15th when the Scorps host Rio Grande Valley . New Mexico will wear special themed jersey to be auctioned off after the game, with part of the proceeds benefiting the Blue Star Mothers New Mexico Chapters.
