Rage rallies past Mudbugs in shootout win
December 7, 2007 - Central Hockey League (CHL)
Rocky Mountain Rage News Release
Broomfield, Colo. - In the first of three meetings between the teams this season, the Rocky Mountain Rage slipped past the Bossier-Shreveport Mudbugs 5-4 in a shootout tonight at the Broomfield Event Center. Rage left winger and team leading scorer Scott Wray led the way with two goals and a shootout goal to win it. The effort propelled him back to the top as the league's leading scorer with 38 points.
The Rage improved to 14-2-2 (30 points) for first place in the Northwest Division. The Rage leads the Central Hockey League with an overall winning percentage of .833. The Mudbugs gained one point to improve to 10-6-3 (23 points) for fourth place in the Northeast Division.
Before tonight, the Mudbugs struggled out of the gate with a 0-5-1 start this season, but have since rebounded by winning 10 of their last 12, including five consecutive wins. It seemed as though the Mudbugs winning ways would continue when they took a 3-1 lead after the first period.
As one of the current hottest teams in the Central Hockey League, Bossier Shreveport came out to a quick start scoring 58 seconds into the game off of a goal by Chris Brassard. It was the fastest goal scored by a Rage opponent this season. Rocky Mountain answered back by the middle of the first period when Chip Dunleavy made a cross-ice pass from the right wing to Tyler Butler who was on the door step and shot it in net.
The teams did not stay tied for long as the Mudbugs took the lead back just over one minute later at 8:41 when Justin Atkins slipped the puck past the stick of Rage goaltender Scott Reid. Bossier-Shreveport's Daniel Pegoraro capped off scoring in the period on a power-play goal at 12:33 giving the Mudbugs a 3-1 advantage.
Rocky Mountain fought back in the second period scoring three unanswered goals to take the lead. The first two goals came from wrist shots by Scott Wray from the left circle for his team leading 14th and 15th goals of the season (37 points in 18 games). It was the first time that Bossier-Shreveport goaltender John DeCaro had given up more than two goals since Oct. 30th when Bossier-Shreveport played Youngstown and gave up five goals.
At 19:35, Rocky Mountain's Daymen Rycroft fired a shot. DeCaro made the stop, but the rebound dribbled behind DeCaro's pads and in goal. Tyler Butler and Brent Cullaton assisted on the power-play goal.
Mudbugs' Brassard added his second goal of the game as the lone goal of the third period to tie the score at four goals a piece.
The Rage found themselves on the penalty kill in the overtime period and Bossier-Shreveport outshot the Rage 4-2 in the period. Rage goaltender Reid kept it scoreless forcing a shootout where Wray scored the only goal in the five rounds.
New faces in the lineup: On Wednesday, the Rage signed rookie goaltender Hugh Boylan to temporarily back up starting goaltender Scott Reid. Terry Dunbar served his second game of a league suspension tonight handed down following a high-sticking incident against New Mexico on Dec. 1. Boylan played club hockey at Texas Tech University the past five seasons and currently works in the team's front office as an account executive.
The Rage returns to action tomorrow (Dec. 8) when they host the Wichita Thunder for their third meeting this season. Game time is slated for 7:05 p.m. Single-game tickets for all home Rage games are on sale now and range in price from $18-$43 per seat (parking included), and may be purchased through Ticketmaster. Season tickets, mini-packs, and group plans are also available for the 2007-08 season by calling 303-439-RAGE. For more information, visit www.RockyMountainRage.com.
