COMSTOCK PARK, MI - Byron Center resident Jose Petroelje recently celebrated his 13th birthday. In his first years of life, the West Michigan boy has spent almost as much time in the hospital receiving cancer treatment as he has at home. Now, after spending a week at camp, Jose is about to go home to a brand-new, custom-created bedroom, courtesy of Klingman's of Michigan, the West Michigan Whitecaps and the Suite Dreams Project.

The Suite Dreams Project is the brainchild of two Detroit women. Started in March of 2001, the program strives to bring comfort and joy to local children stricken with a serious illness by making over their bedrooms. The redecoration process is done completely by volunteers and most of the paint, furniture and other items are donated. So far, the Suite Dreams Project has transformed more than 100 bedrooms with designs ranging from a jungle safari theme to a rocket ship cockpit.

The Suite Dreams Project was brought to the west side of the state in 2003 by the Whitecaps and Klingman's. In that time, the partners have transformed eight rooms for seriously ill children in the area. Designers from Klingman's work with the children to come up with themes that suit their needs and then the plan is implemented with help from Whitecaps players and front office staff. Klingman's also donates all of the furniture that is used in the room.

In Jose's case, Klingman's designer Kat Moore Kanis met with the teenager and his family to work on the room's new look. Taking into account Jose's love of the outdoors, the new room will have a hunting lodge theme with green walls, faux wood wallpaper and a tent canopy. The room's large closet is also getting a makeover, which will make organization easier, courtesy of Closet & Storage Concepts. Other companies donating their services or products for the renovation include Custom Walls, which will be handling the wallpaper installation, and John Wiersma, who will be painting and installing a chair rail.
