Quad Cities River Bandits News Release
The St. Louis Cardinals announced three roster moves as the Swing of the Quad Cities battled the Peoria Chiefs for the division lead last weekend. Lefthanded pitcher Brad Furnish has earned a promotion to high Class-A Palm Beach, becoming the tenth Swing player to move up this season. The Cardinals' 2nd pick (36th overall) in the 2007 draft, Clayton Mortensen, will join Quad Cities, and infielder Willian Sandoval was placed on the restricted list.
Furnish, a 22-year-old from Wichita Falls, Texas, was selected by the Cardinals in the 2nd round of the 2006 draft. A product of Texas Christian University, Furnish has pitched in 21 games with Quad Cities in 2007, including a June 5 start against the Wisconsin Timber Rattlers in which he racked up a season-high nine strikeouts in four innings. The lefty has worked his way up the Midwest League leader board with his 2.42 ERA, good for fifth place in the league.
Mortensen was the Cardinals' supplemental first-round draft pick in 2007. A 6'4" righthander from Spokane, Washington, Mortensen began his career with the organization in Batavia where he went 1-1 with a 1.77 ERA in six games. On July 8, Mortensen struck out seven in just 3 2/3 innings pitched, bringing his season total to 23 strikeouts in 20 1/3 innings.
The Swing of the Quad Cities roster currently stands at 23 active players, two less than the maximum allowed by the Midwest League.
An updated roster accompanies this release.
