
Kernels need extra frame for 7-6 win over Wizards

The Cedar Rapids Kernels needed extra innings for a 7-6 win over the Fort Wayne Wizards in front of 2,252 fans at Memorial Stadium in Fort Wayne on Sunday afternoon. A single by Abel Nieves in the top of the tenth inning scored P.J. Phillips with the game-winning run.
Tyler Johnson was 3 for 6 with a HR, two doubles and an RBI and Matt Sweeney was 1 for 3 with a HR and two walks as the Kernels set a team high with 15 runners left on base. Scott Knazek was 2 for 4 with a run scored.
Kernels starter Jeremy Haynes did not figure in the final decision as he allowed five runs (four earned) on nine hits and struck out five over five innings pitched. Barret Browning (6-3) allowed two hits over two innings to get the win and Warner Madrigal struck out one in the bottom of the tenth to earn his sixth save.
Fort Wayne reliever R.J. Rodriguez (3-2) took the loss for the Wizards.
The win brings the Kernels second half record to 11-11 as the Wizards fall to 10-11.
The final game of this four game series is Monday night at 6:00 pm as Sean O'Sullivan starts for the Kernels. The game can be heard on the internet at www.kernels.com
