Omaha Storm Chasers News Release
Albuquerque, NM - Brian Sanches tossed six stellar innings and Paulo Orlando chipped in with two hits and drove in two runs as Omaha opened the second half of the season with a 6-3 win over Albuquerque Thursday night at Isotopes Park. The Storm Chasers improved to 45-53 but remain 3 1/2 games behind Iowa in the American Conference North Division. Omaha has taken eight of the 13 meetings with the Isotopes so far this season, including four of five on the road.
Brett Hayes led off the second inning with a double and scored the game's first run on a two-out wild pitch by Jonathan Sanchez, who pitched for Omaha last season on a rehabilitation assignment with Kansas City. The visitors added a pair of runs in the fifth when Christian Colon tripled to drive in Irving Falu and scored when Max Ramirez followed with a base hit. Ben Broussard singled to send Ramirez to second base and knock Sanchez out of the game after he had allowed seven hits, walked two and struck out seven to get tagged with the loss. Luis Vasquez came on in relief and recorded two strikeouts to squash any further Omaha rally.
Angel Castro took over on the hill for Albuquerque in the sixth and was greeted rather rudely, as Anthony Seratelli singled and advanced to third base on a Chase Lambin double. Orlando followed with a base hit against a drawn-in infield that delivered both runners to extend the advantage to 5-0. Falu collected a hit and run single that moved Orlando to third from where he scored when Colon bounced into a double play to make it a six-run bulge.
Sanches kept the Isotopes blanked on three singles through five innings before Elian Herrera singled home John Baker to cut the margin to 6-1 but was thrown out trying to stretch the hit into a double. The veteran right-hander needed only 64 pitches to get through his six frames during which he gave up five hits, did not walk a batter and struck out a pair to notch his sixth victory of the season. Will Smith yielded a two-out RBI hit to Dee Gordon in the eighth that brought the Isotopes within 6-2 before Michael Mariot took over in the ninth. Matt Angle's two-out bunt base hit pushed Tony Gwynn across the plate to pull the hosts within three and brought Brian Barden to the plate as the tying run but he popped out to end the game.
The series continues Friday night with Omaha left-hander Justin Marks taking the mound against Albuquerque right-hander Matt McGill. Coverage of the game gets underway at 7:45 pm and can be heard locally on 1180 Zone 2 The Deuce and online at omahastormchasers.com.
