Memphis Redbirds News Release
MEMPHIS, Tenn. - The Memphis Redbirds split a doubleheader with Oklahoma City RedHawks on Friday night at AutoZone Park, dropping the opener, 4-1, and winning the twinbill finale, 5-1.
Combined with a loss by Iowa tonight, Memphis moved back into a tie for first place in the PCL American Northern Division. The Redbirds are 7-2 in doubleheader action this season.
In the nightcap, the Redbirds capitalized on a four-run first inning to back six strong innings from Tyler Lyons (5-1) for a 5-1 victory over the RedHawks.
Lyons allowed six hits for one run while striking out six in six innings. In five starts since being optioned back to Memphis on June 22, the left-hander has gone 3-0 with a 1.60 ERA (6er/33.2ip) and 33 strikeouts.
First baseman Jamie Romak doubled twice and scored two runs. Third baseman Jermaine Curtis added two hits while second baseman Greg Garcia drove in two.
Memphis dropped a four-spot in the first inning against Oklahoma City starter Eric Berger (3-3). With the bases loaded and one out, Adron Chambers reached out a fielding error that allowed Ryan Jackson to score. Garcia and Curtis followed with RBI base hits for the next three runs.
Both clubs traded runs in the third. Oklahoma City's Jonathan Villar doubled and scored on a Brandon Laird RBI base hit. Doubles from Romak and Thomas Pham gave Memphis its final run.
In his first outing with the Redbirds since being optioned by St. Louis, Keith Butler worked around a hit for a scoreless seventh inning.
In a spot start, Berger gave up five runs (two earned) on five hits in three innings for the loss.
In the double dip opener, a pair of two-run home runs gave Oklahoma City a 4-1 victory over Memphis.
Brad Peacock (6-2) finished one out away from a seven-inning complete game, allowing one run with a season-high 10 strikeouts in 6 2/3 innings.
Second baseman Kolten Wong went 2-for-3 with a double and a triple. Outfielder Justin Christian singled in his first game back after being activated from the disabled list.
Adron Chambers went hitless to snap a season-best 10-game hitting streak.
The Redbirds scored their lone run in the bottom of the first as Wong ripped his eighth triple of the season to tie Stubby Clapp's single-season record. He came home to score on a Chad Huffman RBI groundout.
After a Jimmy Paredes leadoff single in the top of the fourth, George Springer hammed his eighth home run of the season over the left field wall to put Oklahoma City ahead at 2-1.
Nick Additon (6-6) tossed his team-leading seventh quality start in a losing effort, allowing two runs on five hits with nine strikeouts in six innings. Nick Greenwood gave up a two run homer in his inning of work.
St. Louis Cardinals right-hander Chris Carpenter will make a rehab assignment for the Redbirds on Saturday and throw approximately 80 pitches. He will be faced by Oklahoma City right-hander Jake Buchanan (1-2, 5.00).
