
Strong Pitching Leads to BlueClaws Win

Lakewood, N.J. â J.A. Happ silenced the Grasshoppers bats and Jayson Drobiak led the offense as the Lakewood BlueClaws (5-16) won 5-1 over the Greensboro Grasshoppers (11-9), Single-A affiliate of the Florida Marlins on Thursday night in Greensboro, NC. Lakewood's pitching held the Grasshoppers to just three hits on the night.
It was a pitching duel early on with Lakewood being no hit by Greensboro's starter Allen Baxter into the fifth inning. With one out in the inning Drobiak broke up the no-hitter and shutout with one swing of the bat connecting for a solo home-run to put the BlueClaws up 1-0.
Lakewood plated four more runs in the seventh inning on four hits. Drobiak led off the inning with a double then scored on Kiel Fishers RBI base hit. Two batters later Josh Mader reached on Jon Fulton's throwing error, scoring Fisher from second. Mader then stole second and scored on Jason Jaramillo's RBI base hit and the BlueClaws were up 5-0.
Happ, fresh of the disabled list, pitched well in his first start for the BlueClaws. Happ pitched six strong innings allowing just two hits and walking one while striking out four.
Greensboro got back-to-back singles in the second inning and did not get another hit till the bottom of the ninth with one out, a solo home-run from Steve Gendran off reliever Nate Johnson.
Jacob Tompkins pitched two perfect innings in relief of Happ for the BlueClaws striking one. Drobiak finished the night 2-for-4 with a double, a home-run, and two runs scored. Sean Gamble finished 2-for-4 with an RBI.
Allen Baxter (L, 0-1) allowed one run on three hits while striking out nine and walking four over the course of six innings.
The BlueClaws wrap up their series with the Grasshoppers and eight game road trip on Friday night. Lakewood will send the right-hander Carlos Carrasco (0-2, 5.30 ERA) to the mound. He will be opposed by the right-hander Timothy Wood (1-0, 7.00 ERA) of Greensboro. On air time is 6:50 p.m. with the first pitch scheduled for 7:05 p.m. on 1310 WADB AM.
This season, the Lakewood BlueClaws are celebrating their fifth anniversary of providing great fun in the Jersey sun. Among the great promotions this year, kids eat free every Monday Night courtesy of ShopRite. In addition, the BlueClaws will host games against affiliates of the New York Yankees and Mets.
