Lake County Captains News Release
(Eastlake, OH)--Captains third baseman Chris Gimenez hit a three-run homer in the first inning Thursday night as the Captains defeated the Hagerstown Suns 4-3 at Classic Park.
Gimenez's home run, his third of the season, highlighted a four-run first inning against Hagerstown starter Gaby Hernandez (1-1). After a hit batsman and a walk to start the inning, Mike Butia stroked an RBI single to start the scoring, and Gimenez followed with a long homer to left to make it 4-0 early.
Lefty Aaron Laffey (1-0) settled in and worked six innings for the Captains to earn his first win of the season. Laffey allowed only a two-run homer to Hagerstown's Grant Psomas in the sixth, which made the score 4-2. Laffey entered the game leading the SAL with a 0.60 ERA.
Michael Hernandez entered the game for the Captains in the seventh and worked two scoreless innings. Hernandez has not allowed an earned run in seven appearances covering 12 2/3 innings this season.
Righthander Kieran Mattison entered the game in the ninth and surrendered a lead-off home run to Ambiorix Concepcion to make it 4-3. Mattison then retired three straight to preserve the win and earn his fourth save in four appearances for the Captains.
Lake County (12-8) pulled to within 2 1/2 games of first place with the win. The Captains and Suns will wrap up the series and the homestand on Friday evening at 7:05. Lefty Tony Sipp will start for the Captains against the Suns' Blake Eager (WELW AM 1330).
