Portland Sea Dogs News Release

Portland, Maine - An impressive pitching performance all-around helped the Portland Sea Dogs end their three-game losing streak as they defeated the New Britain Rock Cats 4-1 Tuesday night at Hadlock Field.

William Cuevas (1-0), making his Double-A debut, was the first Sea Dogs pitcher of the year to go 5 innings in a start. He allowed 1 earned run on 4 hits, and got out of a bases loaded, nobody out jam in the 3rd inning allowing just one run on a wild pitch. It would turn out to be a major turning point in the game.

Offensively, the Sea Dogs got things going early on. After Mike Miller led off the bottom of the 1st with a double, Carlos Asuaje followed up with the first Sea Dogs triple of the season to give Portland a 1-0 lead. Jantzen Witte then added a sac fly to make it a 2-0 game. Witte had another good night, going 1-for-3 with 2 RBI, upping his season total to 6 RBI in 5 games.

Marco Hernandez led off the bottom of the 2nd with a solo home run to make it 3-0, his first homer in Double-A. It would prove to be all the scoring the Sea Dogs would need, as the bullpen held solid. Pat Light pitched two scoreless innings and struck out 4, while Kyle Martin pitched the final two innings and picked up his first Double-A save as well as the first save for the Sea Dogs in 2015. Sea Dogs pitchers would combine to strike out 10 Rock Cats in the game.

It'll be a quick turnaround for both teams, as the rubber match will be played tomorrow afternoon with an 11:00 AM start. Justin Haley will be making his second start of the season for Portland, while Ryan Carpenter gets the starting nod for New Britain. All of baseball will be celebrating Jackie Robinson Day, while the Sea Dogs will be having every player wear uniforms with the #42 to commemorate the occasion.
