
Stripers Routed in Scranton, 11-1

MOOSIC, PA - The Scranton/Wilkes Barre RailRiders throttled the Gwinnett Stripers 11-1 Saturday night in game two of the three-game series at PNC Field.
The loss was the fourth in five games on the current road trip for the Stripers, who have been outscored 20-4 and out-hit 30-8 in the first two games of the series against the RailRiders.
In the top of the first inning, Luis Marte led off the game with a double to left off Scranton starting pitcher Justus Sheffield. He moved to third on a ground out to short by Danny Santana and scored on a ground out to third by Austin Riley for a 1-0 lead.
That would be Gwinnett's lone run of the night.
Meanwhile, the RailRiders sent nine men to the plate in the bottom of the first against Stripers starter Lucas Sims and scored three times. Bruce Caldwell tied the game with a leadoff solo home run (6), Abiatal Avelino made it 2-1 with an RBI single and Francisco Diaz drew a bases-loaded walk for a 3-1 lead.
Scranton pushed the lead to 6-1 in the bottom of the second on the strength of a solo homer (4) by Mark Payton and a two-run blast (12) from Mike Ford.
The hit parade continued in the bottom of the third as Payton drilled a two-out RBI single off Chad Bell to make it 7-1.
Jason Hursh entered in the fifth, and after retiring the first two batters, gave up a double to Caldwell and an RBI single to Payton to raise the lead to 8-1.
Hursh allowed another run in the seventh on a double play ball with a runner on third to make it 9-1. Chad Sobotka yielded two more runs in the eighth for an 11-1 final.
Sims (L, 4-3) lasted only 2.0 innings, giving up seven hits and six earned runs. He walked two and struck out five. Bell pitched 2.0 innings with four hits, one earned run and four strikeouts. Hursh tossed 3.0 innings with five hits, two earned runs and one walk. Sobotka went 1.0 inning with one hit, two runs and three walks.
For the RailRiders, Sheffield (W, 4-3) worked 5.2 innings with three hits, one earned runs one walk and three strikeouts. Stephen Tarpley pitched 2.2 innings with one hit and three strikeouts. Joe Harvey struck out two of the three batters he faced in a perfect ninth.
At the plate, Marte was 2-for-4 with a double and a run scored for Gwinnett. Scranton's 17-hit attack was paced by Payton, who was 4-for-5 with a homer and three RBIs. Diaz was 3-for-4 with a double and two RBIs, Ford was 2-for-4 with a double, homer and two RBIs and Caldwell was 2-for-5 with a double, homer and one RBI.
The Gwinnett Stripers (48-57) and Scranton/Wilkes-Barrie RailRiders (55-47) conclude the three-game series on Sunday at 1:05 p.m. The Stripers will start left-hander Kolby Allard (6-4, 2.80 ERA). The RailRiders have left-hander Nestor Cortes (4-4, 3.38 ERA) scheduled. Tony Schiavone has the play-by-play call on 97.7 and 93.5 FM "The Other Side of the River" beginning at 12:35 p.m.
