Streak Snapped at Six
July 14, 2012 - American Association (AA)
Winnipeg Goldeyes News Release
St. Paul Saints leftfielder Willie Cabrera obviously had enough of the Winnipeg Goldeyes six-game winning streak and the Saints three-game losing streak.
Saturday night at Shaw Park, Cabrera's second home run of the game was the difference as the Saints beat the Fish 4-3 to put a halt to both streaks.
Cabrera hit a solo shot in the first inning off Goldeyes starter Ace Walker and then, with the game tied 3-3 in the eighth; hit a solo shot off reliever Kaohi Downing as the Saints avoided a sweep in this weekend series with the Fish. Winnipeg had already won the first two games of this four-game set. It was Winnipeg's first loss since Friday, July 6, when they lost 4-3 to the Fargo-Moorhead RedHawks.
Winnipeg's loss combined with Fargo's win - the RedHawks 11th straight - over Grand Prairie dropped the 32-21 Goldeyes into a first-place tie with Fargo in the American Association's North Division.
"Hopefully we can start another one (streak) tomorrow," said Goldeyes manager Rick Forney philosophically. "I didn't think we were flat tonight, but you can look flat when you get only six hits and three runs. Neither team did much offensively. The game was well pitched.
"I thought that guy (St. Paul starter Luke Anderson) did a real nice job for them and then (Chris) Odegaard came in and pitched two clean innings for them. We should have busted it open early, but we didn't get it done."
Cabrera gave St. Paul a 1-0 lead after the top of the first, but Winnipeg centrefielder Chris Roberson hit a solo shot in the bottom of the first to tie the game at 1-1.
The Goldeyes scored twice in the third as Price Kendall led off with a single, Chris Roberson walked and Jon Weber was safe on an error to load the bases. Yurendell de Caster walked to send Kendall home and then Roberson scored on a sacrifice fly off the bat of Luis Alen.
But St. Paul scored twice off Ace Walker in the fifth to tie it and that set up Cabrera's heroics in the eighth.
It was a tough no-decision for Walker who went seven complete innings allowing three runs on only five hits and left with the score tied at 3-3. Walker has now had five straight quality starts.
Odegaard (2-5, 3.35 ERA) earned the victory in relief for St. Paul while Downing (3-2, 2.86 ERA) took the loss. Dustin Klabunde picked up his fourth save for the Saints.
The Goldeyes and Saints will play the final game of this four-game series on Sunday afternoon at Shaw Park. Lefty Chris Salamida (2-3, 3.99 ERA) will get the start for Winnipeg while Anthony Claggett (2-2, 8.20 ERA) will toe the slab for the Saints.
Game time on Sunday afternoon is 1:30 p.m. and it can be heard live on TSN 1290 with Paul Edmonds calling the play-by-play.
