Saints Get Two Blasts from Cabrera, Solid Pitching, to Win 4-3

WINNIPEG, MB (July 14, 2012) - The St. Paul Saints bookended two rookie pitchers and used two long balls in between to end their three game losing streak and snap the Winnipeg Goldeyes six game winning streak with a 4-3 win on Saturday night at Shaw Park.

In the first two games of the series the Saints fell behind early to the Goldeyes, but on Saturday they made sure that didn't happen as Willie Cabrera hit a solo homer, his sixth of the season, to give the Saints their first lead of the series at 1-0.

The Goldeyes didn't waste any time erasing that deficit tying it with their own solo homer in the bottom of the inning as Chris Roberson clubbed one off Saints starter Luke Anderson, his ninth of the season.

Anderson, the rookie out of North Dakota State University from Savage, MN, didn't get much help from his defense in the third. Price Kendall led off with a single and Roberson followed with a walk. Jon Weber then hit a line drive right at centerfielder Jose Hernandez who had the ball hit off the heel off his glove for an error which loaded the bases. Anderson walked Yurendell de Caster to force in a run and Luis Alen followed with a sacrifice fly to give the Goldeyes a 3-1 lead.

Anderson settled down and didn't let the inning rattle him giving up just two hits in the next three innings and went 6.0 innings allowing three runs (two earned) on five hits while walking three and striking out three.

The Saints capitalized on a Goldeyes error to tie the game in the fifth. Tanner Townsend led off by reaching on an error by shortstop Jose Duran. Jon Townsend followed with a single moving Tanner to third. Alex Garabedian made it 3-2 with an RBI single to center. With runners at first and second and nobody out Adam Frost dropped a sacrifice bunt and it paid off as Hernandez tied the game on a sacrifice fly.

The game stayed that way until the eighth when Cabrera did something he's never done in his six year career. With one out he slugged a solo homer to right-center, his first two homer game of his career and third by a Saints player this season. Ole Sheldon accomplished the feat twice on May 24 at Sioux Falls and July 1 at Fargo-Moorhead. The Saints took a one run lead and the bullpen made it hold up.

Chris Odegaard, who took over for Anderson in the seventh, pitched a perfect seventh and wound up going 2.0 innings allowing just one hit while striking out one.

In the ninth lefty Kyle Carr started the inning on the mound for the Saints, but he walked left-hand hitting Ridge Carpenter. The second rookie of the night came into pitch, Dustin Klabunde. The young righty out of the University of Minnesota retired Jose Duran on a sacrifice bunt and got two more ground outs to end the game and pick up his fourth save of the season.

The same two teams meet in the finale of the four game series at 1:30 p.m. on Sunday. The Saints send RHP Anthony Claggett (2-2, 8.20) to the mound against Goldeyes LHP Chris Salamida (2-2, 3.99). The game can be heard on Club 1220 KLBB.
