Guelph Storm News Release
A two game weekend at the Sleeman Centre saw the Storm pick up two of a possible four points hosting the Plymouth Whalers on Friday and the Kingston Frontenacs on Sunday. Friday night at the Sleeman Centre, the Storm had a slow start but a number of terrific stops by Tom McCollum kept them in the game early on. A Tim Priamo goal late in the first energized the home side as they went on to build leads of 2-0 and 4-1 on their way to a 4-2 win over the Plymouth Whalers. Special teams were the deciding factor in the contest. While the Whalers clicked for a pair with the man advantage, the Storm penalty kill replied with two of their own. Tyler Melancon and Matt Kennedy each found the back of the net down a man for Guelph. Sunday afternoon at the Sleeman Centre, the Storm dropped a home game for the first time since October 17th falling 4-1 to the Kingston Frontenacs. Outshooting their opponents 41-29 in the contest, Brandon Buck had the lone tally for the Storm as they just could not put the puck past Mavric Parks. With two points on the weekend, the Storm currently sit second in the Midwest Division, three points behind the first place London Knights.Grand & Toy Player of the Week - Tyler Melancon
Tyler had a point in each Storm game this past weekend, including a short handed marker in the Storm's 4-2 win against the Plymouth Whalers on Friday. The Oshawa native helped set up Brandon Buck for the lone Storm goal on Sunday in the 4-1 loss against the Frontenacs. Along with two points on the weekend, Tyler put up an even rating in plus/minus. In 20 games played so far this season, Tyler has recorded two goals and 11 assists for 13 points. With his shorthanded goal on Friday, the 18 year old is currently tied for the team lead with one.
Friday, November 14th: Guelph Storm vs. Brampton Battalion, 7:30 pm
On Friday night the Storm play the Battalion for the second and final time this year. The first match-up between these two clubs came less than two weeks ago when the Storm fell to the Battalion at the Powerade Centre 5-4 in overtime. Brandon Buck put the Storm ahead by one mid way through the third on a shorthanded marker, but the Battalion battled back with two Cody Hogdson goals, scoring with 9:12 left in the third to force the extra frame and then less than two minutes into overtime for the victory. The Battalion are currently riding an 11 game win streak, leading the Central Division with a record of 13-6-0-0 and 26 points.
Design a Goalie Mask Contest Winners Recognized Mask Winners
The Guelph Tribune "Design a Goalie Mask" competition came to a close last month with nearly 100 entries received from Storm fans between the ages of 4 - 16. The entries were narrowed down to ten finalists, then with the quality of all of the submitted designs, two winners were selected to receive the Grand Prize.
The Guelph Storm and the Guelph Tribune are proud to announce that Alex Keating and Arlay Arboleda both from Guelph are co-winners of the "Design a Storm Goalie Mask Contest". These two Grand Prize winners will be introduced in an on-ice presentation prior to the Guelph Storm home game on Friday, November 14th, 2008 versus the Brampton Battalion. During the on-ice presentation, the winners will receive:
-Â A custom painted goalie mask featuring their winning design.
- A second version of the winning design will be created and presented to a Guelph Storm goaltender on Friday, November 14th during the on-ice presentation. The masks will be worn by the Storm goaltenders for the remainder of the 2008/09 season.
The Guelph Storm and the Guelph Tribune would like to thank all of the entrants for their hard work in participating in the contest.
Saturday, November 15th: Guelph Storm vs. Kitchener Rangers, 7:30 pm
The Kitchener Rangers enter the eye of the Storm for the first time this season. These two clubs will play each other a total of eight times throughout the course of the 2008-09 season. The Storm traveled to Kitchener back on October 13th for the first match up of the year. Storm rookie Cody McNaughton scored both Storm goals in the first helping his team jump out to a two goal lead. Unfortunately that was all the offence the Storm would muster as they would end up losing the contest by a score of 3-2. After Saturday, these teams will cross paths again less than a month later when the Rangers return to the Sleeman Centre on Sunday, December 7th. After winning the OHL Championship last season, the Rangers look to rebuild during the 2008-09 season. With a record of 7-9-1-1 and 16 points, the Rangers sit last in the Midwest Division two points behind the Owen Sound Attack.
Storm to Retire #18
On Saturday night prior to the game against the Kitchener Rangers, the Storm will formally retire the #18 in honour of the late Paul Fendley. The number will be raised to the rafters of the Sleeman Centre in an on-ice ceremony before the game versus the Kitchener Rangers.
The number 18 has not been worn by any junior 'A' hockey player in Guelph since the fatal on-ice accident that occurred on May 5, 1972 at Guelph's Memorial Gardens.
Several of Paul Fendley's teammates on the Guelph CMC's club that went on to capture Guelph's first national championship in 20 years that same tragic evening will also be on hand for the on-ice ceremony, along with Paul's brother Tom Fendley.
Sunday, Novmeber 16th: Guelph Storm @ London Knights, 6:00 pm
Sunday afternoon the Storm travel to London to play their third game in less than 72 hours at the John Labatt Centre. The Storm has won the first two contests between these two teams by the identical score of 3-2. The second victory was in a shootout back on October 11th when Brandon Buck scored the lone marker in the third to force overtime and the eventual shootout. Storm goaltender Thomas McCollum stopped both Knight shooters while Peter Holland and Anthony Nigro scored for the Storm to hand their team the important two points. After Sunday, these teams don't cross paths until January 16th when the Storm head back to the John Labatt Centre for a 7:30 start. With a record of 14-5-0-1, the Knights are currently three points ahead of the Storm for the Midwest Division lead.
