Tri-City Storm News Release
Waterloo, Ia. - The Tri-City Storm scored three goals in the first, Walker Duehr had the first multi-goal game of his career and the Storm powered past the Waterloo Black Hawks, 6-3, Friday at Young Arena.
Duehr's goal-scoring dominance started 1:50 into the first and culminated his strong evening with the sixth goal, giving the forward six goals and eight points in his first nine games with Tri-City.
Carson Meyer, Jake Wahlin, Nico Sturm and Joey Matthews pitched in with multi-point efforts, gunning the Storm to a second-place tie with the Sioux Falls Stampede in the West Division (34 pts.).
Jake Kielly played stable net for the Storm, stopping 35 of 38 shots, giving the squad energy to blast Drew Hotte, who stopped 36 of 42 Storm shots.
The Storm opened the game on fire, scoring the first three tallies. Walker Duehr picked off a pass from Christian Meike at 1:50 of the first and stuffed right post for Tri-City's first goal. Duehr has eight points in nine games for the Storm, exceeding the seven points he had in 49 games with the Sioux City Musketeers in 2014-15.
After Tri-City killed off a penalty with about five minutes left in the first, Joey Matthews got the puck at the left point, trickled it net front and scored past Hotte at 15:33 of the opening period. Justin Dixson and Collin Rutherford received the helpers.
Matthews finished with a goal and an assist, his first multi-point game, to give the offensively-minded defenseman has two goals and seven points for the Storm. Matthews has skated in 25 straight games for the Storm after missing five of the first six games.
The offensive motor rumbled for the Storm late in the first after Brian Hawkinson drew his first of two penalties on Waterloo. Jake Wahlin designed a pass to Carson Meyer at the left post. After it ticked off Meyer's stick, Nico Sturm cleaned up the mess with 1:49 left in the first, his ninth of the season and team-best sixth on the power play.
The three-goal first was Tri-City's highest-scoring opening frame since Opening Night against Omaha.
The second proved fruitful for the Storm as well, even after allowing a goal to Michael Davies at 9:54 of the frame. Wahlin found a rebound from the left faceoff circle, twisted, and scored his seventh goal of the season, with assists to Sturm and Meyer at 13:32.
To continue the goal rush, Wade Allison drove the center lane with 1:45 left of the first and ripped a shot past Hotte for the power forward's 13th of the campaign, with a helper to Alex Limoges. Allison has ten goals and one assist in his last 12 games.
After back-to-back goals by the Black Hawks cut the lead to 5-3, Walker Duehr took a pass from Paul Washe at the left goal line and rifled it past Hotte at 9:45 of the third, preventing Waterloo from slicing into the Storm's lead again.
The Storm went 1-for-4 against the Hawks on the power play and prevented Waterloo from scoring on three chances.
