Stars Fall to Lancers, 3-2

Lincoln, Neb. - The Lancers rode a two-goal second period to a 3-2 win inside the Ice Box on Friday night.

Neither team scored in the first period, though Omaha controlled the pace of play, outshooting the Stars 20-8.

The teams combined for three goals in the second period.

The Lancers opened the scoring with two goals late in the period. Forward Austin Alger slid one past Lincoln goaltender Patrik Virtanen at the 15:06 mark, then forward Josh French added another for Omaha less than one minute later to make the score 2-0.

Lincoln forward Mike Gillespie scored in his first game since returning to Lincoln at 16:42 of the period to cut the deficit to 2-1 heading into the locker room.

Each team would add a goal in the third period.

Omaha forward Nick Rivera scored only eighteen seconds into the frame to make it 3-1, before Stars forward Dominick Mersch redirected a goal in at the 15:54 mark of the period.

The Lancers held on for the 3-2 win.

Virtanen made 34 saves on the night.

The Stars return to action Saturday night for the second half of the home-and-home series with the Lancers. Puck drop is set for 7:05 p.m. in Ralston Arena.
