Storm Start Sinks Hawks
January 8, 2016 - United States Hockey League (USHL)
Waterloo Black Hawks News Release
A three-goal opening period kept the Tri-City Storm out of reach during a 6-3 win against the Waterloo Black Hawks Friday at Young Arena.
A miscue below the icing line gave the Storm their first goal 1:50 into the game. Walker Duehr was on the spot to stuff a chance inside the post. Tri-City struck again at 15:33 when Joey Matthews' shot from the left point dipped through traffic and slipped in off a defender. The visitors added one more, converting a power play with cross-ice passing and a last touch by Nico Sturm at 18:11.
Michael Davies' opportunity during a transition sequence allowed Waterloo to draw a goal back at 9:54 of the second. However, Tri-City answered with two of their own: first Jake Wahlin into an open side at 13:32, then Wade Allison with a biting wrist shot at 18:15.
A Waterloo third period spurt brought the possibility of a comeback into focus for a time. From a faceoff win, Yuri Terao blasted a shot into the net at 5:30. Thirty seconds later, during a delayed penalty situation, Tony Stillwell got the last touch on Collin Saccoman's attempt, bringing Waterloo back within two goals. The rally ended at 10:25 on Duehr's second goal of the night.
Waterloo and Tri-City get together for an instant rematch Saturday at Young Arena. The puck drops at 7:05, with good seats available from the Domino's Black Hawks Box Office by calling (319) 291-7680 or online from waterlooblackhawks.com.
