No quit.
That's been the common theme for the Guelph Storm as of late, and it was right in the focus once again as the club concluded the northern swing visiting the Sudbury Wolves Sunday afternoon.
Down 3-1 in the second period, the Storm scored two goals 13 seconds apart, climbing their way right back into the thick of things, and eventually forcing a shootout and an earned point out of the 4-3 loss.
Michael Giugovaz was nothing but busy and stellar between the pipes, coming up with 36 of 39 saves on the game, while Troy Timpano was just the same, turning aside 42 of 45 shots in the win. Giugovaz went 2/4 in the shootout, as Timpano was successful on three of four Storm attempts.
The opening frame set the tone for the feisty and physical tilt, with both teams coming out of the gates playing with a clear edge. Minutes in, Brock Philips took the brunt of the physical play from a Macauley Carson hit behind the net. Levi Tetrault, taking exception, responded with an early altercation resulting in the extra-two for instigating.
Three minutes later, the Wolves got things going on the scoreboard as Mikkel Aagaard was left alone in front to pocket his 15th of the season, giving Sudbury a 1-0 lead.
Following the goal, the Storm had two power play advantages - and had three straight on the period - including a four-minute advantage as Alan Lyszczarzyk took a major high-sticking penalty eight minutes into game.
The Storm were unable to capitalize on the power play in the frame, with a close call coming as C.J. Garcia appeared to tie the game on Guelph's last advantage. With the Wolves' Jarett Meyer in the box for interference, the Storm captain put a point shot through Timpano, but it would be called back due to goaltender interference.
Three minutes later, the Wolves extended their lead to two as Dmitry Sokolov walked in off the wing to put one by Giugovaz.
The Storm responded with less than two minutes remaining in the frame, getting on the board as James McEwan drove the net to have Matthew Hotchkiss make no mistake on the rebound for his seventh of the season.
Trailing by a goal heading into the second, things didn't go as planned in the first half of the middle frame for the Storm. With Kyle West and McEwan taking tripping penalties 24 seconds apart nearing the five-minute point of the frame, the Wolves would enjoy a five-on-three advantage for 1:36.
Unable to capitalize on the advantage, Sudbury later regained their two-goal lead with 7:46 played in the second as Lyszczarczyk found the back of the net immediately after McEwan was sprung for a break only to hit the iron.
With a 3-1 score up on the board, both teams maintained the physical play, next with Brock Philips and Michael Pezzetta participating in a spirited altercation. Pezzetta, receiving the extra two for instigating, gave way to Guelph's fourth power play on the game.
Finally capitalizing on the man-advantage, Jake Bricknell pocketed his seventh of the season to pull the Storm to within one, making it a 3-2 game at 9:56 of the second.
13 seconds later, defenseman Noah Carroll knotted things up at three-a-piece with a quick top-shelf shot for his second of the campaign.
With 20 minutes left in regulation and a 3-3 tie, the goaltenders took over in the third period. Giugovaz came up with several big glove saves to keep the score locked at three, while Timpano was forced to make a few remarkable saves through a flurry of Storm pressure nearing the second half of the final frame.
Unable to solve anything in regulation, overtime would be the next step. Solving nothing, a shootout resolved the game.
For Sudbury, shooting first, David Levin scored followed by Carroll being stopped by Timpano in the first round. Next, Giugovaz stopped Sokolov to give Isaac Ratcliffe to tie up the shootout next. That would be it for the Storm, though, with McEwan and Luke Burghardt both being stopped by Trimpano in the following rounds, while Ryan Valentini won with Sudbury's second successful attempt in the fourth round.
As a result, Sudbury took the second game of the two-game season series 4-3.
The Storm are back in action this Friday hosting the North Bay Battalion.
