Sting Fall in London

After coming off of a 6-5 win against the Peterborough Petes Saturday Night at the SSEC, The Sting travelled to London for an afternoon matchup against the rival London Knights. The Knights skated away with the 4-1 win on the back of a 32 save performance from Tyler Parsons.

It was all London in the first period when the Knights opened the scoring in the first minute of the game courtesy of Matthew Tkachuk. Chad Heffernan and Jacob Graves added goals of their own. The Sting spent a lot of time in their own end in the first period, and had a tough task of shutting down the Knights offense who were looking to rebound from a loss to the Petes Friday night. It was a physical first period as both teams combined for 7 penalties in the period. For a period that seemed to belong to the Knights, the Sting lead in the shot category at the end of the first.

The Second period provided a more even playing field as both teams provided excellent scoring chances in what was a fast paced period between both teams who were looking to close the gap between first place in their respected divisions. Dvorak added to the Knights lead, and Anthony Salinitri got the Sting on the board shortly before the end of the period. McGregor and Chychrun both drew assists on the lone goal for the Sting. Although the Sting provided multiple scoring chances, they were unable to put one by Knights goalie Tyler Parsons.

The Third period was scoreless, but filled with penalties. Although both teams had multiple powerplay chances, the Sting and Knights failed to register a powerplay goal throughout the game. The physical aspect of the game had reached a breaking point when Kevin Spinozzi cross checked Knights rookie Max Jones in the corner. Both teams combined for 20 penalties in the final 1:11 of the third period and caused a 25 minute delay to sort out the penalties. The Knights are 4-0 against the Sting this season with 2 more meetings before the end of the season.

Justin Fazio got his second start in 2 nights and made 33 saves on 37 shots making key saves to slow down the Knights offense. Tyler Parsons made 31 saves on 32 saves and was awarded first star of the game honours. Parsons stood tall and shut down a red hot Sting offense coming off of a 6 goal performance the night before.

STING NOTES:

In the three games that spanned over Thursday to Sunday, the Sting posted a 1-2 record and recorded 2 out of a possible 6 points.

The Sting return to the SSEC on Friday January 29th to take on the Flint Firebirds in a home and home series.

The Sting will travel to Windsor on Sunday January 31st for a matchup against the division leading Spitfires on Hockey day in the OHL.
