Saginaw Spirit News Release
OTTAWA, ONT. - On Sunday afternoon, the Spirit wrapped up their long weekend on the road for the final meeting against the Ottawa 67's this season. The Spirit ended a three-game winning streak for the 67's, as they defeated Ottawa 3-1 on Sunday.
The Spirit and 67's were scoreless after 20 minutes of play Sunday afternoon. Saginaw granted Ottawa three power play opportunities, but were unable to capitalize thanks to an impressive goaltending performance by Evan Cormier. Ottawa outshot Saginaw 11-4 in the opening frame.
After successfully killing off three penalties in the contest, the Spirit were finally awarded a power play opportunity of their own as Trent Mallette was whistled for holding. At 6:21 of the second period, Matt Kreis ripped a shot through traffic to put the Spirit on the board with a 1-0 lead. Mike Davies and Tye Felhaber assisted Kreis' 12th goal of the season. The Spirit offense gained momentum in the second period, outshooting the 67's 15-7.
At 10:31 of the third period, Tye Felhaber cushioned the Spirit's lead, after he connected with Mitchell Stephens to push the Spirit ahead 2-0. Marcus Crawford also picked up an assist on the play. With 4:16 left to go in the contest, Ottawa pulled goaltender Liam Herbst in hopes of catching the Spirit. The 67's sliced the Spirit lead in half as Jeremiah Addison put Ottawa on the board at 16:23 of the third period. That didn't stop the Spirit from slipping in one more goal before the final buzzer sounded. With seven seconds to go in the contest, Blake Clarke notched an empty net goal to secure a 3-1 victory for the Saginaw Spirit. Final shots favored the 67's, 30-25.
