Reading Fightin Phils News Release

The Reading Fightin Phils dropped game three of six to the Akron RubberDucks 5 to 3. Madison Stokes two-hit, two-RBI night highlighted the Reading offense today, which had six of their starting nine reach base at least once.

Veteran right-hander Mark Appel (L, 0-1) was able to work out of early trouble in his second start of the season, as he only allowed one run to come across with the bases loaded.

In the top of the second, Stokes was able to support Appel by getting him that run back with a line drive up the middle to bring in Nick Matera.

A pair of runs would come across for Akron in the bottom of the second before Appel handed the ball over to Austin Ross, who only limited Akron to one hit over his inning and a third of work.

After the RubberDucks added two more in the fourth, McCarthy Tatum roped a double into left field to begin a rally for Reading. After Josh Stephen and Luke Miller walked, Stokes reached on a throwing error by Akron third baseman Marcos Gonzalez which scored two.

The Fightins would strand the bases loaded to end the seventh, keeping the RubberDucks ahead 5-3.

Joel Cesar and Brian Marconi kept the RubberDucks off the scoreboard from the fifth inning on, as both threw two scoreless. Cesar only allowed one baserunner, courtesy of a walk, and struck out two. Marconi was solid as well recording two walks and two strikeouts.

Stokes continued to ravage the Akron pitching staff by hitting a leadoff single to start the ninth. Representing the tying run, Arquimedes Gamboa just missed launching a game-tying homer by a matter of feet, but the R-Phils were unable to mount a comeback, losing 5-3.
