N. CHARLESTON, SC â The South Carolina Stingrays defeated the Pee Dee Pride 3-2 Thursday night at the North Charleston Coliseum.
South Carolina got off to a quick start, scoring two goals just 1:16 apart midway through the first period.
At 8:33, Ed Courtenay led a 2-on-1 rush and blasted a slap shot past Sebastien Laplante from the left-wing circle for his first goal of the season. Shortly after that, Kevin Spiewak took a quick wrister that beat Laplante to the near side. After that goal, Laplante was replaced by Nick Boucher.
The Pride pulled within one with 4:57 remaining in the first period. On a goal-mouth scramble Michael Chin was able to bang a rebound past Maxime Daigneault for his third goal of the season, with assists from Eric Naud and Gregg Johnson.
After a scoreless second period, South Carolina scored 3:01 into the final period to take a two-goal lead. Skating shorthanded, Matt Reid created a steal in the Pride zone, and then gathered in a loose puck along the near boards. Reid's quick wrist shot from the boards beat Boucher to the short side for his fourth tally of the season.
The Pride were not done yet, pulling back within one with 6:09 to go in regulation. On another goal mouth scramble Chad Spurr, making his season debut, was able to slide the puck home to make it 3-2.
Pee Dee pulled Boucher with 1:30 left, and several quality scoring chances on Kirk Daubenspeck, who recplaced Daigneault after the first period, but the veteran made several key saves to preserve the win.
