Stingrays Trade for Defenseman Wellar

South Carolina Stingrays News Release


North Charleston, SC - The South Carolina Stingrays and Head Coach/General Manager Jared Bednar announced today that they have traded for the rights of defenseman Patrick Wellar. In keeping with club policy, terms of the agreement were not disclosed.

The Rays traded forward Ryan Toomey to the Reading Royals for Wellar. Toomey had played only two games for the Stingrays before injuring his shoulder. In those two games he notched one assist against the Florida Everblades.

In 25 games with Reading, Wellar had one goal and seven assists to go along with 47 penalty minutes this season.

Last season, the 6' 4" 220 pound defenseman split the season between the Columiba Inferno and the Toronto Marlies of the AHL. With Columiba, he led the team in points for a defenseman with eight goals and 20 assists.

The Carrot River, SASK native was also a part of the Kelly Cup Champion Alaksa Aces in 2006-2007. Wellar was drafted by the Washington Capitals in the 3rd round, number 77 overall, in the 2002 NHL Entry Draft.

Wellar is currently playing with the Hershey Bears of the AHL where he has played 21 where he has one goal and two assists while procuring 37 penalty minutes.

Tomorrow is Pink in the Rink Night!! Help the Rays support the American Cancer Society as they take on the Mississippi Sea Wolves tomorrow at 7:05 P.M. The Rays will be playing on pink ice to show their support of finding a cure. They will also be wearing pink jerseys that will be auctioned off after the game to raise money for the ACS.
