Reading Acquires Forward Ryan Toomey

Reading, PA - The Reading Royals of the ECHL, affiliate of the Toronto Maple Leafs of the National Hockey League and the Toronto Marlies of the American Hockey League, today announced that the team has acquired forward Ryan Toomey ["TOO mee"] and future considerations from the South Carolina Stingrays in exchange for the rights to defenseman Patrick Wellar.

Toomey (5'9/175) (25), who hails from Bolton, Ontario, started this season with Mercyhurst College where he scored five goals and assisted on six others (eleven points) in thirteen games before joining the Cincinnati Cyclones of the ECHL in early December. While with the Cyclones, Toomey scored a goal and picked up four assists (five points) in nine games before being traded to South Carolina on January 31, 2009. Toomey played two games with the Stingrays and registered one assist. During his time at Mercyhurst, Toomey scored a total of thirty goals and assisted on thirty five others (sixty-five points) in 108 collegiate games. Wellar, who scored one goal and added seven assists (eight points) and forty-seven penalty minutes in twenty-five games with the Royals, is currently recalled to the Hershey Bears of the American Hockey League.

The Royals return to action tomorrow night (Saturday, February 28 @ 7:05 pm) when the Dayton Bombers visit the Sovereign Center. Saturday's game will be broadcast live on the Royals Radio Network Presented by Transmissions by Arbogast (True Oldies WRAW 1340 am in Reading; and The Ticket WLAN 1390 am in Lancaster), as well as on the internet via webcast hosted by Sportsjuice.com, which can be accessed through the Royals website.
