February 27, 2009 - ECHL (ECHL)
Dayton Bombers News Release
The Dayton Bombers started their six game road trip earning a very important 2 points this evening against the 5th place Wheeling Nailers. The first period was one for the goalies as both goaltenders came up with critical saves. Dayton was held scoreless during a lengthy 5-on-3 advantage. Though they were able to fire 14 shots on the Nailers' goalie Curtis Darling in the period. The highlight of the period came after Wheeling's Bryan Ewing was awarded a penalty shot when he was taken down in front of the net. Paul Drew came up big, as he was able to get his blocker out to keep the score at zero. The Bombers held Wheeling to just 11 shots on goal during the period.
The Bombers got on the scoreboard first when Les Reaney notched his 8th goal of the year, as he was able to backhand a pass in behind Darling to give Dayton a 1-0 lead. The lead was short lived when Matt Auffrey received two minutes for holding the stick. Wheeling was able to take advantage of the power play as Billy Ryan earned his second goal of the season from Cashman and Krantz. Ryan Smyth broke the tie for the Bombers with just over five minutes remaining in the period when he put away a rebound with the assists going to Justin Chwedoruk and Joe Van Culin. The goal was Smyth's 14th on the year.
Dayton was able to extend their lead as Les Reaney earned his 2nd goal of the night and 9th of the year at the 8:05 mark of the third. Just thirty-six seconds later Wheeling's Kelly Miller brought the Nailers within one at 3-2 to earn his 4th goal of the year. That's as close as Wheeling would get, as Paul Drew was spectacular in net for the Bombers stopping 28 of the 30 shots he faced on the night. Andrew Fournier would get his goal as a Bomber earning an empty netter to end the game giving him his 2nd goal of the year.
