NORTH CHARLESTON, S.C. - South Carolina rallied with three goals in the third period and Chris Chaput scored the overtime game-winner on the power play to give the Stingrays a 5-4 sudden-death victory over the Gwinnett Gladiators before 3,467 fans at the North Charleston Coliseum.

"That was a huge character win for us," South Carolina coach Jason Fitzsimmons said. "The guys never quit. That's two comeback victories in a row and to beat the Gladiators for the first time in four games, I'm proud of the players. There were a lot of positives to take from this game."

South Carolina (5-3-0, 10 points) started off the scoring as rookie defenseman Jamie Fraser sent a shot from the right circle past goaltender Dave Caruso, who was making his first start after a stint in the American Hockey League with the Chicago Wolves. Fraser's first of the season at 6:18 was assisted by Evan Schwabe and Cail MacLean.

Gwinnett (6-1-2, 14 points) tied the game at 1-1 on the power play. Jamie Milam hammered a low slap shot from the point beating Davis Parley to count his third goal of the campaign. ECHL points and assists leader Brad Schell picked up a helper along with Jeff Campbell.

The Gladiators went up 2-1 at 14:43 of the second. Scott Mifsud deposited a loose puck on the edge of the crease for his second of the year. Joel Stepp and Brandon Kaleniecki garnered assists.

Gwinnett grabbed a two-goal lead at the 16:03 mark of the second, as veteran forward Mike Vigilante roofed a shot over the right shoulder of Parley to net his sixth marker to make it 3-1 for the Gladiators. Helpers were awarded to Chad Painchaud and Andy Contois.

In the third, the Gladiators looked like they put the game away as Jeff Campbell potted his fifth of the year at 5:27 to make it 4-1.

But the Stingrays got a power play tally from MacLean, an even strength goal from Marc Busenburg to close the gap to 4-3.

Scott Romfo knotted the score at 4-4, with a goal on the man advantage at 14:03.

Then in overtime, Caruso, the goaltender was nabbed for tripping Evan Schwabe.

On the ensuing power play, Chaput buried a loose puck to end the game in dramatic fashion.

South Carolina converted on 3-of-7 power play opportunities, while Gwinnett went 1-for-8 with the man advantage. Stingrays outshot the Gladiators 35-20.
