Gladiators fall to Stingrays 5-4 in Overtime

Chris Chaput's overtime goal for South Carolina gave the Stingrays a 5-4 overtime victory over the Gladiators on Tuesday night at the North Charleston Coliseum. Gwinnett picks up another point in the overtime loss and moves to 14 points on the year with a 6-1-2 record.

South Carolina opened the scoring 6:18 into the first period as Jamie Fraser was able to beat Dave Caruso from the left wing circle with a snapshot that beat the netminder just inside the far post. Evan Schwabe and Cail MacLean collected the assists on the goal.

Jamie Milam tied the game at one with a power play goal at the 11:54 mark of the first period. Milam ripped a one timer past South Carolina netminder Davis Parley off a feed from Brad Schell at the point. The assist was Schell's ECHL league-leading 21st point of the season. Jeff Campbell also had an assist on the goal for the Gladiators.

Gwinnett took its first lead of the game on Scott Mifsud's 2nd goal of the season as he jammed the puck past Parley in a pile up in front of the Stingray's net. Joel Stepp and Brandon Kaleniecki hooked up to pick up the assist on the goal for Gwinnett at the 14:43 mark of the second period.

Mike Vigilante picked up his sixth goal of the season tucking the puck up underneath the cross bar to give the Gladiators a 3-1 lead. Chad Painchaud had an assist on the goal with just 3:57 left in the second period as he dumped the puck off the back dashers to set up Vigilante. Andy Contois also had an assist on the goal.

Jeff Campbell pushed the Gladiators lead to 4-1 with his 5th goal of the season as he redirected the puck past Parley at the 5:27 mark of the third period. Colton Fretter and Schell had the assists on the goal as they set up Campbell on the goal.

South Carolina battled back with three third period goals to send the game to overtime. MacLean collected the first goal of the third period for the Stingrays on the power play at the 7:12 mark of the period, just four seconds into the man advantage. Schwabe and Reid had the assists on the goal for the Stingrays.

Marc Busenberg cut the Gladiators lead to a goal at the 10:37 mark of the period as he was wide open in the slot and beat Caruso with a snap shot. Reid added his second assist of the game on the goal for the Stingrays.

Scott Romfo tied the game at three at the 14:03 mark of the third period with the Stingray's second power play goal of the game. Romfo was able to beat Caruso through the five-hole for the marker with assists going to Chris Chaput and Peter Szabo.

Caruso suffered his first loss of the season as the Roswell, Georgia native finished with 19 saves for the Gladiators in the loss. Gwinnett was outshot in the loss by a 35-20 mark.
