South Carolina Stingrays News Release
Duluth, GA - Travis Morin had four points, including scoring the game winning goal short handed, as the South Carolina Stingrays defeated the Gwinnett Gladiators 4-3 at the Arena at Gwinnett Center.
"We really came out to play tonight, right from the beginning," said Head Coach Jared Bednar. "[Ian] Vigier was great in net, and we didn't have any passengers. That's what you need to win."
The Stingrays took advantage of their first power play opportunity in the first period, taking a 1-0 lead. Michael Dubuc made a great pass to Maxime Lacroix in front of the crease and Lacroix pushed it past Kevin Nastiuk. The goal came at 4:46 from Dubuc and Travis Morin. The Rays would have to prove their mettle on the penalty kill as they successfully killed off a two minute 5 on 3. At 17:37, the Stingrays would get a fortunate bounce when Viktor Dovgin's shot was tipped in by Keith Johnson to make it a 2-0 game. The goal, which was assisted by Dovgin and Morin, was tipped numerous times before Johnson knocked it past Nastiuk.
After killing off a penalty to start the period, the Stingrays gave up the only goal in the second. Travis Fuller found himself in front of the net at 4:07 and slid it past Ian Vigier to cut the lead in half. The goal was assisted by Matt Siddall and Jeff Mason and made it 2-1 after two periods of play.
Daniel Sullivan was able to tip in a shot to tie the game up at two in the third period, but it wouldn't take long for the Stingrays to respond. Just :17 seconds later, Dubuc got his 11th goal of the year on a beautiful backhanded shot over the shoulder of Nastiuk. The goal came at 11:51 and was assisted by Brad Farynuk and Morin to give the Rays a 3-2 lead. Travis Morin would get his fourth point of the game (1g, 3a) when he scored short handed to make it a 4-2 game. The goal came at 18:34 and was Morin's ninth goal of the year, from Nate Kiser and Scott Romfo. The goal turned out to be the game winner, as Scott Marchesi got his fourth goal of the year with just :50 seconds left to go in the game, but even with their goaltender pulled, they were unable to tie things up before time expired.
The winning goaltender was Vigier who stopped 32 of the 35 shots he faced. The losing goaltender was Nastiuk who stopped 29 of the 33 shots he faced. The Rays went 2-4 on the power play while killing off all nine short handed situations they faced.
