Johnstown Chiefs News Release

Elmira, Ny. - The Johnstown Chiefs were handed back-to-back regulation losses for the first time this season as the Elmira Jackals beat them 2-0 on Friday night.

The Chiefs and Jackals looked like they were all still waking up from the Christmas holiday for the better part of the first period. Johnstown missed a chance on a 2-on-1 with Randy Rowe and Ryan Del Monte as Joe Grimaldi broke up the centering pass. On the other side, Moises Gutierrez hit the post on a one-timer from the left wing. Grimaldi ended up cracking the scoreboard first at 17:28 of the first with a backhand shot on a rush down from the point that beat Ian Keserich.

Johnstown's offense started to come to life in the second period, as it matched its first period shot output, five, in the first six minutes of the middle frame. David Shantz turned in some key saves, though, and kept the Chiefs off of the scoreboard. They were looking at a mere one-goal deficit for the third period, but Wes Cunningham made it 2-0 in favor of the home team with 37 ticks left in the second.

Nine shots were thrown Shantz's way by Johnstown in the third period, including multiple chances on a 1:35 5-on-3 power play. However, none of them could find the twine and Shantz had his second shutout of the season against the Chiefs.

Ian Keserich was saddled with his fifth loss of the season in spite of making 19 saves on 21 shots. The Chiefs power play went 0-for-6 on the night.
