Idaho Steelheads News Release
BOISE, ID- The Idaho Steelheads (17-11-2) scored the game's first goal, and never trailed en route to a 5-1 win over the Utah Grizzlies (11-12-4) in front of a sellout crowd of 5,250 at Qwest Arena Friday night.
First and foremost, there was an NHL feel to the game tonight. The Steelheads were representing their NHL affiliate, the Dallas Stars, by wearing Stars jerseys. The jerseys are part of the Pepsi Future Stars Jersey Auction benefiting the Muscular Dystrophy Association. Utah was wearing New York Islanders jerseys.
Bryan McGregor opened the scoring at 1:17 of the first, with assists going to Mark Bomersback and Kelly Sullivan; McGregor held on to the puck, and placed a wrister into the Utah net. Just over 15 minutes later, Matt Stephenson scored the eventual game-winner after taking a faceoff win from Ben Nelson, and placing the puck behind Utah goalie Michael Mole, who has made 25 consecutive starts in net for Utah.
James Sixsmith scored the only Utah goal of the night at 18:07 of the first period; an unassisted tally that beat Idaho netminder Matt Climie, which made it 2-1 Idaho heading into the first intermission.
Mark Bomersback scored the only goal of the second period at 15:23; the goal was his fourth, and was assisted by Marty Flichel and Bryan McGregor.
In the third period, Matt McKnight took a pass from Steve Gainey, marched in all alone, and netted his third of the season. Tyler Shelast also picked up an assist on the goal. Gainey would add the game's final goal, an unassisted marker at 16:56 of the third. The goal was his 11th.
Climie earned the win for Idaho, and improved to 10-5-0; he stopped 29 of 30 shots. Mole took the loss, and fell to 9-12-4; he stopped 34 of 39 shots.
