NORTH CHARLESTON, SC The South Carolina Stingrays, proud affiliate of the Washington Capitals, have agreed to terms with forward Andrew Cherniwchan, Head Coach and Director of Hockey Operations Ryan Warsofsky announced today. Cherniwchan returns to the Stingrays after spending time with the team during parts of four seasons from 2011-2015.

"We're very excited to add Andrew Cherniwchan to our forward group," said Warsofsky. "We are familiar with him and the time he has spent here. He's a guy that we will look to in every situation. High character and high hockey IQ are two things that we look to in bringing players in and he is on the top of that list."

Cherniwchan, 27, first joined the Stingrays towards the end of the 2011-12 season and has suited up in 83 total games with the Rays, scoring 26 goals and 29 assists for 55 points. Last season Cherniwchan played in 55 games for the Providence Bruins of the American Hockey League (AHL), accounting for eight points (four goals, four assists). A native of Hinton, Alta., Cherniwchan also played for the Springfield Falcons (AHL) during the 2014-15 season.

"I'm really excited to be back with the Stingrays," said Cherniwchan. I know a bunch of guys on the team and it will be great to be back with the group. I'm also excited to play under coach Warsofsky. It was great playing for him when he was an assistant and this will be a good chance for him to use what he's learned the last few years. The Stingrays have a great atmosphere with some really passionate fans and everyone always has a positive attitude coming to the rink each day."

The 5-foot-11, 176-pound forward played for Northern Michigan University in the Central Collegiate Hockey Association (CCHA) for four seasons from 2008-2012. During his collegiate career, Cherniwchan scored 84 points (35 goals, 49 assists) in 146 games. In 2009-10, he helped lead the Wildcats to an NCAA Tournament appearance and a fourth-place finish in the CCHA league standings. The forward also served as an assistant captain for Northern Michigan during his senior season.

The Stingrays' 24th season in the Lowcountry starts on October 22. 2016-17 Season Ticket Packages are on sale now featuring discounted pricing and great benefits!
