South Carolina Stingrays News Release
North Charleston, SC - The South Carolina Stingrays scored with just :18 seconds to go in the game and won in overtime on a Travis Morin game winning goal over the Columbia Inferno at the North Charleston Coliseum.
"It was an exciting game to be a part of," said Head Coach Jared Bednar. "The guys played hard tonight and didn't give in late in the game."
In the first period the Rays got out quickly, scoring just :50 seconds into the game on Trent Campbell's 16th goal of the year from Morin and Sean Collins. A late goal by Columbia tied the game up after one period of play.
In the second period, South Carolina retook the lead when Todd Griffith got his 19th goal of the year, his sixth as a member of the Rays, from Chris Chaput and Collins. They pushed their lead to two goals when Matt Scherer got his 12th of the year from Pierre-Luc O'Brien and Griffith at 15:24 to make it a 3-1 game.
The third period started with the Rays up 3-2, but that was quickly erased when Jeremy Hall scored at 1:06 of the period to tie things up. Just past the halfway point of the period, Columbia got their second power play goal of the game to take their first lead of the night.
With just over a minute left to play in the game, the Rays pulled goaltender Josh Johnson in favor of the extra attacker. Bednar's gamble paid off, as Matt Smith got his 4th goal in just his 4th game, to tie the game up at four with only :18 seconds to play. In overtime, it took Morin just 1:10 to put it away as he got his team leading 34th goal of the season from Trent Campbell and Collins.
The winning goaltender was Johnson who stopped 25 of the 29 shots that he faced. The losing goaltender was Todd Ford who stopped 27 of the 32 shots that he faced. The Rays went 0-3 on the power play while killing off three of the five short handed situations they faced.
The Rays are back in action Tuesday night when they travel to Augusta to take on the Lynx. Game time will be at 7:05 P.M.
