
Stingrays Prevail in OT Thriller 5-4

North Charleston, SC - Forwards David de Kastrozza (2g, 1a), Trent Campbell (2g) and Matt Pope (1g, 1a) recorded multi-point games as the South Carolina Stingrays (11-6-0-1) defeated the Gwinnett Gladiators (9-6-3-2) 5-4 in overtime at the North Charleston Coliseum Saturday night.
de Kastrozza broke open the scoring at 6:20 of the first period with an unassisted marker beating Gladiators goaltender Marc Cheverie (L, 26 saves on 31 shots) over the glove from between the faceoff circles. He added his second of the night moments later at 7:40 from Pope. The Gladiators responded at 15:18 on their only shot of the opening period when forward Joey Haddad lifted the puck over the blocker of Stingrays netminder Philipp Grubauer (W, 16 saves on 20 shots) from the bottom of the left-wing circle. Forwards Tyler Murovich and Colin Vock added the assists.
Gladiators forward Bryan Brutlag made it 2-2 on a penalty-shot goal at 2:10 of the second period. The Stingrays jumped back in front at 4:55 when forward Matt Pope tapped a rebound past Cheverie for his seventh goal of the season. de Kastrozza and forward Joe Pereira recorded the assists. Campbell reclaimed a two-goal lead for the Stingrays at 8:29 from forwards Chris Higgins and Pierre-Luc O'Brien. The Gladiators pulled back within one with a power-play tally at 11:41 from forward Pat Galivan snapping a shot past Grubauer from defenseman Will Colbert and forward Andy Brandt. With just over a minute to play in the frame, Gladiators forward Ryley Grantham knocked in a backdoor pass from Galivan to knot it up 4-4. Defenseman Cody Brookwell received the second assist.
Campbell provided the game-winning goal for the Stingrays at 1:42 of overtime sneaking past the Gladiators defense to backhand a shot over the glove of Cheverie. Defenseman Zach Tarkir and Grubauer acquired the assists. The Stingrays finished 0-for-4 on the power play while the Gladiators went 1-for-5.
