Glads Knocked off in OT, 5-4

NORTH CHARLESTON, SC -- Trent Campbell's overtime goal lifted the South Carolina Stingrays to a 5-4 win over the Gwinnett Gladiators Saturday night at North Charleston Coliseum. The Glads (9-6-3-2) did pick up a point despite the loss, and are now tied with the Rays (11-6-0-1) atop the South Division.

Gwinnett forward Spencer Bennett and defenseman Corey Fienhage were recalled to the AHL earlier in the day, and with defenseman Brad Miller being put on the 21-day IR the Gladiators were three players short for their third game in as many days. Despite battling back from 2-0 and 4-2 deficits, Campbell worked his way to the slot and beat goaltender Marc Cheverie 1:42 into OT to seal the Rays win with Zach Tarkir and goaltender Philipp Grubauer assisting.

It was Campbell's second game-winning goal in the past couple weeks against Gwinnett. He had the winning marker late in the third of SC's 3-2 win over the Gladiators back on November 19th.

Cheverie made 26 saves in his first start back with Gwinnett after being previously called up to AHL Portland.

South Carolina notched the first two tallies of the game, as David de Kastrozza scored his fifth and sixth goals of the season at 6:20 and 7:40 to make it a 2-0 game. His first marker came on the Rays first shot of the contest.

Gwinnett answered on their first shot of the game and only shot of the opening period. Forward Joey Haddad took an outlet pass from Tyler Murovich and broke in alone on Grubauer, deking to the near side and rifling a shot top shelve far side to bring the Glads within one at 15:18. Colin Vock had the second assist, and the Rays led 2-1 through 20 minutes out-shooting Gwinnett 10-1.

The Glads fought back in the second period to tie the game, as Bryan Brutlag was hauled down on a breakaway drawing a penalty shot, and he beat Grubauer five-hole to tie the game at 2:10 of the second.

South Carolina answered back to regain their two-goal lead. Matt Pope's seventh at 4:55 and Trent Campbell's fifth at 8:29 again out the Gladiators' backs against the wall, and again Gwinnett came back.

Pat Galivan fired a shot from the point that beat a screened Grubauer on the powerplay at 11:41 to make it 4-3 SC with Will Colbert picking up the lone assist. Ryley Grantham then tied it at 18:51, burying a centering pass from Brandt from in close to tie the game at four heading into the third.

South Carolina out shot the Glads 31-20, while Gwinnett managed to go 1-for-5 on the man advantage while limiting SC to an 0-for-5 collar.

Gwinnett is next in action Wednesday, November 30 in Florida at 7:30 p.m.
